Hello,
I am a home schooled student who is completing the equivalent of the 12th grade in a few months and i'd like to know if i have even the remotest of chance of being accepted into the USAFA.

I have not been involved in any official sports, and most of my classes were done in an un-accredited manner, i'd have around a 3.7 (or higher) GPA if i was in a public school.

Do to various issues i have not taken the SAT yet, and will be taking it this June, after doing that i will be entering my local tech school to get EMT-I certification to help provide a job for myself through college, i am hoping to my AAS, and become involved in Student Government.

I have just recently received my Eagle Scout award, and have 750+ community service hours from working at my Church, local Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and various scout-related service projects, i will also be training to be an adult scout leader.

During the next few months i will also be getting my GED (As required for the tech school that i will be getting my EMT-I cert from),
Am looking at going abroad for a brief volunteering trip, and will be getting my A+ certification (heh).

I have also been on several relief and "mission" trips.

I guess my real question is, will the USAFA consider someone 2 year out of HS, if they make those two years count.

Please be honest,
I thank you for taking the time to read this and reply.

I forgot to mention that i am in my second year of study in Arabic, and my second year of French, and will cont. to work on both for the next few years

I am three years out of high school and just now getting accepted into the Prep School. Graduated in 2008 myself. Just keep pressing forward with your goals. Continue to press on by taking classes at a community college. Keep the grades up. Your community involvement looks great! Try applying next year! They like to see precalc at least, so take some calculus at the community college. Start your application for next year now. Get in touch with your ALO once you get to that step. Dress really well for the interview and make a great first impression.

You always have a chance at improving your chances!

Best of Luck Always
Jim

Thanks for the reply Jim & Congrats on getting into Prep School.

Not too late

The AFA will look at your package as a homeschooler. While you seem to be missing the athletics they look for, you have (hopefully) leadership positions in the scouting world. Your volunteer hours are off the charts. I know from previous posts that Mormon cadets can take off 2 years for a mission trip with AFA approval. you can wait 2 years and still be considered as long as you don't turn 23 (I think) prior to admission.

The big questions remain:
1. What are your SAT/ACT scores (Take them as often as you can)?

2. What will your CFA look like? Are you in excellent physical shape?

3. Do you really want to spend the next 9-20 years of your life in the USAF?

One thing is certain. You won't get in if you don't apply.

If it is your dream, go for it!

Thanks for the reply and advice!

1. I have not taken the SAT yet, i will be taking it in June, and perhaps again this fall.
Should i take the ACT as well?

2. I am not in excellent physical shape, but i am working on it. spending a min. of 2 hours a day on a mixed bag of exercises, and my diet is "superb" according to my Doc.

3. Yes. Most definitely, i will be honest and say that i do not see the Air Force as my lifetime career, but i'd be honored and "excited" at the prospect of spending a decade or so as a member.

Hey,

Getting into USAFA is getting more and more difficult. It is interesting to think that I might not have made it if I had waited another year and I really understand the pressure on everyone with the limited appointments in the next couple years. Anyway, if you have any questions for a current homeschooler at the academy, please ask me. I will do my very best to answer anything you throw my way.

Later,

Brian

It's never too late, but you need to apply to be appointed. Look at the standards and work to meet them. You also need to consider alternatives, as BSA says this year was very tough for applicants and the next couple of years will be tougher.

Hi Mel,

The above posters have very good advise. I'd like to add that IF your Plan A doesn't work out, you can always apply the next year, but this time try and polish your "weaknesses" and present a stronger application. (My story)

Best of luck to you!

I would try to sign up for the May SAT and ACT, plus do it again in June and than again in Sept.

The AFA superscores, so there is a no harm no foul by taking it multiple times.

BSA is correct for the next 2 yrs the appointment numbers will be dropping, so work on every weakness. You have months to start filling the gaps.

You have no athletics per se. I would suggest you make sure you can max the CFA. The AFA is very concerned about CFA scores due to their altitude. Just making the mins with no athletics can hurt you.

The reason it is called the Whole Candidate Score (WCS) is because they want the candidate that is well rounded. Academics are not enough, nor is athletically gifted. They want the best that have both.

Since you are going for EMT, you may also want to get a life guarding certificate. This will show some athleticism.

The only guarantee for not getting appointed is not applying.

Additionally, since you are home schooled, start looking into your MOC's regs for a nomination, many times they request recs, see who they want you to submit.

Finally, holding off to take that SAT until June can also hurt you since you need to fill out the PCQ. The AFA determines who can apply, you can't do it without them, it is not like college. If you haven't taken the SAT or PSAT this can create a delay in becoming an applicant.

Part of the WCS iis the rec from the ALO. If you are not an applicant you will not be assigned an ALO.

Take the ACT or SAT as soon as possible. If it means driving 45 minutes to a back up hs that has an opening, than drive 45 minutes.

What if im not ready to apply this year? Would it hurt me to wait a year to get fitter and bolster my resume
