Competitive Slate

If your MOC submits a competitive slate and the person that gets offered the appointment declines, then does the USNA pick another person off of the slate?

If there is another fully qualified candidate from that district, it is reasonable to expect that Admissions will offer that candidate an appointment. You will discover that the armed forces try to keep the MOCs at least reasonably happy, as they control the DOD budget pursestrings. Best wishes.

Thank you. Also pertaining to competitive slates, if there are two open slots for a MOC do all 20 nominees compete among each other or are there two distinct slates of 10?

Everything points to each slate being considered independent of any other(s).

A great question I've not seen in many seasons brought one of the great non-answers.

I'm betting ol' '64's behind is plenty sore from ridin' that barbed-wire fence.

Thanks for the advice. My disctrict has 2 slots and so far there is only 1 accepted appointment. Thus, if the two slots come out of the same slate and a second appointment hasnt been made (or if it gets turned down) i have that much of a better shot at getting it.

I'm pretty confident that's up to the MOC. I know this year our MOC had two WP slates. He put one candidate only on one of the slates (we're not a very competitive area), thus making him a principal nomination. The other slate he just submitted the remaining names as a competitive slate. If I look at the database (for WP at least) it does break it down by slot, plus the number of the candidate assigned to the MOC (which of the 5 slots). So for one district this year candidates could have been for example assigned to WI071 or WI075 - meaning Wisconsin, district 07, slot 1 or 5. The remaining slots (2, 3, 4) are attached to currently assigned cadets. And in some districts with two slots I can see that some candidates received more than one nomination - ie. they're on two slates since (again just an example) both WI071 and WI075 appear in their nomination box. I'm pretty sure you can see this on the CIS for USNA as well trying to recall from my sons' experiences.

Don't forget, the reason the MOC is submitting 10 nominees in the first place is because that MOC has a vacancy at that service academy. By law, that vacancy must be filled provided at least one of the nominees is qualified.

Marcieme: Is there a way to determine just how competitive an area you live in? Do you have any idea about Alabama? I know it's not up there like California..... But is it at the bottom? Are some states more competitive depending on which SA you are applying to?
