Can AFROTC Cadets wear their Eagle Scout Medal on their uniforms? At least during public events? (like weddings or parades)

Short answer: No. The Eagle Scout Award is not an award authorized or distributed by the DoD. It goes both ways--you can't wear medals earned in Boy Scouts, Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Girl Scouts on a military uniform, and you cannot wear decorations authorized for military uniforms on Scouting uniforms. The link below goes into a little bit more detail, but on the Army side; I'm assuming the AF has a similar position. I think JROTC has a recognition ribbon, but I'm not sure.

are you sure about that? I know a lot of eagles in my det and I've never seen one wear the medal.

I'd say you can't, but unless someone proves me wrong...

when in doubt, check the AFI.

I was actually laughing at him. Should have used this one I guess :yllol:

My DS would like to know if he can wear the 25m swim badge he got when he was four.

I know you dads like to joke around, but remember it's a high school senior who wants to serve our country and is asking what is probably a legtimate question on here.
Do us moms need to give you older kids a time out?!!!

I am sorry but if a 17-18 year old needs to ask that question they deserve all the ribbing that comes their way.

I apologized before you posted, cjs. Am I off the hook for the dreaded "time out"?

Of course patentesq. Hey, I'm enjoying my Pinot Noir too much to police the time out section anyway!

Honestly the answer is correct it is not in regs. I understand the pride you have for earning it, trust me an Eagle Scout is no easy feat.

HOWEVER, the thing you need to do as a C100 cadet is not to highlight yourself too much in that manner. This will not be like the boy scouts, and it can become a negative. You are now in the AFROTC program.

Once you get there you will realize that. Also, our DS and his friends who have been in AFROTC do not wear their ROTC uniforms to weddings or such. The reason why is they understand that they are not AD. They actually prefer to wear suits and blend in with everyone. People who matter know your success and it will be talked about, plus, the haircut gives it away really quick! People who don't will assume you are AD and it just creates confusion.

Additionally, the reason why if you ask any cadet (ROTC or AFA) those blues take alot more time to get ready than slapping on a suit. You have to remember to bring every little piece with you home for the occasion. If I recall correctly, until you are contracted you hand back those uniforms at the end of the yr, so if you converted a Type 7 to a 3 yr Type 2, that uniform will not be with you over summer break.

Trust me they only give you limited shirts and ring around the collar happens quickly. Just picked up 3 sets from the dry cleaner for DS, and he wears ABUs most of the time. Buy yourself WISK to take to school because that is the best in getting out ring around the collar! Niagara spray starch is also the best for the shirts to keep them crisp.

Also, if you are a military child, go to the BX, buy 1 extra short and 1 extra long sleeve shirt. Plus, one extra pair of blues pants. Your child will thank you for it. Don't forget to get more white undershirts, black socks and shirt garters too.

ABU's will not be offered to them until C200 IF they get SFT.

There is no such thing as a bad question on these forums.
A candidate/parent should feel free to ask any question without fear of being being ridiculed.

It's a legitimate question....

cpkousky, being an Eagle Scout is an incredible award. It shows that you are among a very select group of high-school students who are dedicated and genuinely hold values that are highly regarded in the military. My DS was not an Eagle Scout, but he regrets having not pursued that path.

The point is that the medal for this accolade is not an officially recognized award for AFROTC. It is not that AFROTC doesn't value the award or think it's incredible. It's just that they are not authorized on the AFROTC uniform. And when you do become an AFROTC cadet, you will likely earn ROTC-recognized awards that are, like your Eagle Scout award, well-deserved and incredible.

But when you go on active-duty Air Force, you won't be permitted to brandish those AFROTC awards either (or your Eagle Scout medal for that matter). It is not that the Air Force doesn't value these achievements or think they are incredible. It's just that they are not authorized on the Air Force uniform.

The good news is, though, when you ultimately retire you get to wear whatever pin you want to on your civilian suit! And if any government official ever says you can't wear your Eagle Scout medal on your civilian suit (either as a cadet or otherwise), please PM me asap!

Your question was a good one. The Citadel is just one example of schools that have dealt with this. My son is in AROTC, they do not allow the medal on the uniform.

Please don't be shy posting any question you have, While a few adults seem to get some weird pleasure out of ridiculing high school students, most will give you a serious answer.
