Any locals or anyone who's done it have a preferred overnight airport close to the Academy to fly in to when visiting the AFA for a couple of days?

"Preferred Overnight Airport close to the Academy"? Not sure I understand the question.

There are basically 2 airports. One in Colorado Springs, and one in Denver. Denver is about an hour from the Academy. There are more flights in/out of Denver. So; the cost to your nearest airport COULD be cheaper if you fly into Denver. A rental car is pretty much a given no matter which airport you fly into, if you're staying for a couple days. (Unless your cadet is a C2C/C1C - Junior/Senior). Then they probably have their own cars. The Colorado Springs airport can be just as inexpensive, if you live in an area that has an airport that flies into colorado springs. It all depends on where you're flying in from. But I'm not sure what you mean by an "OVERNIGHT Airport". You mean like "Red-Eye" flights?

LOL, the key phrase in the title was 'flown themselves' in. We have our own plane and will make some of the trips out there for fun visits in it. So we have a lot more options where to land and stay. The overnight part meant that some airports have transient hangar space and some don't and some that do charge insanely large amounts and move your plane around a lot when you not there, etc, so it pays to do your research and ask around. Sometimes the transient hangar fee is waived or severly reduced if you buy x amount of gas from the FBO, etc. COS and the Cutter Aviation FBO seem to have a decent rep but there's also Meadow Lake and colorado springs east airports for example. Yeah, for parents weekend and week proceeding I-day we're flying Southwestern into Denver and doing the rental car thing. Not even in the same universe as far as fun goes but a LOT more reliable than flying yourself from the East Coast through the Midwest!

Ok; now I understand. For what it's worth, that part of colorado has tons of small airports. Especially for private planes. I would simply research them and contact them for prices on static or hangar prices.

Anyone flown....

luckymacy,

Fly into Colorado Springs Airport right there. You can also stay at the Best Western Academy Hotel, at the south gate to the Academy. Here is the link.

We stayed there when my DS was at Summer Seminar, free breakfast and the rates are reasonable, four years ago. The owner supports the Acdemy.

Good luck and God Bless,
