questions about parents' weekend

I looked at the schedule from this year's parents' weekend, but I'm still not quite clear on exactly when we get to take our DS off campus and what the activities involve. We are contemplating bringing younger DS & DD for parents' weekend (YAY for frequent flyer miles :thumb:), but I'm not clear on whether it's appropriate to bring other kids (they're both teens). Also, does DS get to sleep at the hotel with us, and if so, which nights? We'll have to get a 2nd hotel room for the nights that he is with us, so we have to figure that into the cost. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Well from what I recall you will see him on Friday on campus - he will have to attend Beat Retreat which is something you will also want to attend. Normally after the football game on Sat afternoon - around 6pm they will get liberty. Based on the 2011 - 2012 Regimental Calendar it is saying they will not have to return until 6 pm on Tuesday, Sept 7th at 6pm. I find this unusual - normally they return early evening Labor Day. I would suggest you call the main administration number and validate the return date. Assuming the return date it is actually Labor Day evening then he should be able to leave the academy from Sat evening through 6pm on Labor Day. Make sure you take him out for a steak dinner.

Siblings

And other teens are definitely welcome, related or not, especially female.

And make sure you get a good photo of mom pinning the USNR pin on DS/DD. That's a real milestone.

It did seem like forever for them to announce that first Liberty. And remember, there are no guaranties when it comes to Liberty.

Hmmm -- I don't see a link to the 2011/12 regimental calendar. Where can I find this? I've been looking at this year's calendar.

sorry that was 2010 - 2011; originally posted for a return on Tuesday after Labor Day and then corrected for a return on Labor Day. It is also possible that Parents Weekend does not fall on Labor Day weekend in 2011 - in that case the return date will be Sunday evening.

Oh, ok -- the Nat'l Parents' Assn website has parents' weekend 2011 as Sept 2-5 (Labor Day weekend), so I guess that means that we will likely have "possession" of DS on Sat & Sun nights. So odd that I'm already excited about parents' weekend and DS hasn't even left yet :shake:

I believe that I posted in another thread some time ago that when we got our first Plebe Liberty, I missed it since I was restricted that weekend. Too many demerits for shoes, belt buckles, gear adrift, etc.

If DS misses out on liberty, I'll park myself on campus from sunup until sundown -- no one messes with mom's chance to see her kid

My DS just wanted to hang out, veg out and did not want to do alot of talking. We took him to South Street Seaport, it was very cool having people look at him and thank him for his service. The street drummers played Anchors Away when we walked by. Definitely bring the siblings if you can, they will enjoy seeing their sibling in uniform. The change from indoc is remarkable!!

Yes KPDAD you are correct...we had a Plebe this year (2010-2011) and he was free after the game Saturday about 6 pm to spend Sat/Sun nights with us and return by 1800 Monday-so would imagine it will be the same this year. I will have a Plebe again this year as well (2011-2012) so it will be intersting to see who gets lib and when. They do have to attend Beat Retreat which we skipped, only because it was crowded, hot and we needed to decompress after the emotions of the day. Assuming the return date again this year is actually Labor Day evening, then our DS will be enjoying , yes, a big Texas sized steak at Burton and Doyle's on Sat night!

Very cool....I bet it was awesome feeling for your DS. Where is South Street Seaport???

Shipgirl64, speaking of steak for your plebe here are my thoughts for treating your new plebe to a steak this fall.

There are plenty of great steakhouses in Long Island & Manhattan. Over the last four years we have hit most of them - Burton & Doyle's and Rothmann's are two notables. Peter Luger's is up for graduation this year. But for a newly sworn in plebe during parent's weekend we will never forget Bryant & Cooper's in Roslyn. As you know when your plebe exits the academy on Saturday after the game they will have to remain in uniform - we went directly to the restaurant with our DS, his brother and sister and waited to be seated for a 7 pm reservation.

This is a beautiful old style chop house and it was packed with locals. As we entered through the main dining room it was lively with loud conversation that abruptly became silent as we passed through and each person at every table picked up their knife and began tapping their water glass - it was a collective chime that overtook the entire restaurant. At first we did not realize what was happening but then realized they were paying respect to a new plebe - to this day it remains a memory that sends a shiver down my back.

Moms get to pin on the USNR pin? She'd love that so much!

That depends on the company. Our DS is in BandCo. They were pinned by the upper classmen in a formal ceremony while we watched.

That's different from 2013 - DS is Band Co as well and I pinned him after the main ceremony.

DS is also in Band Co (2012A) and was pinned by his mom.

DD was in Band Co. and was pinned by a company officer, after they were quizzed for plebe knowledge.

My bad

Doh, I just looked back at our pictures of the day and have a pic of DS getting pinned by Mom. I guess the upperclassmen just handed them the pin. Sorry for the misinformation.

Pins

Yeah, I wasn't going to respond to your post NCDS until I had a chance to look at my pictures. Our son is also a 2014 in Bandco and I was pretty darn sure mom pinned that thing on. I do recall the little ceremony behind Wiley Hall but thought they just handed them the pins.

That sure was a great day wasn't it? We even lucked out with the weather.
