Just how hard is it to get in to the USNA if you're from Maryland? People I've talked to say it is harder, but haven't specified just how much so.

Do the best you can because it is difficult to earn a USNA appointment no matter where you live.......MD, TX, MI, FL, CA, WA, TN, VA, SC, NH, IA.......on and on

Geography certainly plays a role in the "difficulty factor" in gaining admission to the Naval Academy.

One responder implied that it doesn't matter. That's not true. It does matter. There's nothing you can do about it - but it does matter.

A candidate from a remote area of Nebraska will not need to have as impressive of a package as a candidate from Alexandria, Virginia or San Diego, California, for instance.

It is tougher to gain admission from Maryland due to the number of applications, however, that is partly negated by the fact that they admit far more from Maryland than the size of the state would seem to warrant.

If you had a map of the United States in front of you, and you placed a pin on the map for each midshipman in the Brigade, you would see it very lopsided toward the east coast.

On the other hand, the Air Force Academy attracts many more cadets from west of the Mississippi.

Regardless of whether or not it makes it harder to get in it definitely makes it a lot more difficult to get a nomination. That being said it may even make getting a nomination to a different academy easier because the vast majority of people from maryland will put USNA as their top choice on the nomination applications (and for sen cardin put it as their only choice)

Do the best you can, you cant change where you live or how many of your neighbors are applying.
