LOA stats

Can someone who received a LOA please post their stats. I'm only asking so I can compare myself and not ask the what are my chances question.

I've read on these forums people who might not have had the most impressive stats receive LoA's because they got their application done ASAP. So even though i don't know the stats, i do know that getting that app done real early would help.

Just to give you an idea:

SAT: 2000

GPA: 95%

Rank: top 10% (pretty competitive school)

EC: multiple varsity sports, one varsity captainship, NHS Pres., other clubs, Full time summer job, ect....

If you want an LOA my best advice would be to get those SAT scores as high as possible.

Apparently varsity letter is important too I was blown away when this guy with a 2200 SAT got rejected because he didn't have one. I hope he applied to Harvard or Yale or something.

ACT is better than my SAT. 28 math 27 English.. These scores still aren't that good I guess... Everything else about my application I would say is above average.

LOA's are extremely rare. They mostly use them to fill "gaps" in the class, i.e. minorities and athletic recruits.

I didn't get one with a 2200 SAT, 34 ACT, 3 sports, clubs, etc.

Remember that the vast majority of people do NOT have a LOA.

7 varsity letters 3 times captain. That seems covered

I thought a few hundred had LOA's. Maybe that includes the recruits

Best way to look at LOAs is someone West Point admissions wants so much that they gotta catch them before another college does, athletes and other special students can fall into this category.

Does that mean a college student cannot receive a LOA?

Not necessarily, but you know what don't even worry about it. Whats important is an appointment, LOA is just a conditional promise, appointment means you actually are accepted!

True but it would make the 8 month wait muchhhhh easier

Straight A's all high school, 4.6 GPA, 4.45 cumulative HS GPA
Varsity letters in weightlifting and wrestling
NJROTC one year
Member of 5 honor societies including NHS
Treasurer of Spanish Honor Society
100+ hours of community service
Various awards for academic performance and perfect FCAT (Standardized tests in Florida, not hard though)
Rank 4 of ~495 in my class
Summer employment

Like others have said, strive for an appointment - not necessarily an LOA. I do have to agree that receiving an LOA eased my mind but it's not a guaranteed acceptance as you still need a nomination and medical qualification.

Focus on completing your file as early as possible. I finished mine early and it paid off. Keep working hard.

Do you mind me asking what your subscores were for the SAT and ACT?

When I took the ACT (I took it sophomore year and I'm retaking it) I got a 30 composite with 31 math, 29 english, 35 science, and 25 reading. Will the disparity between my reading and science scores hurt me?

Also, for the SAT (which I will not be retaking) I got a 2130 with a 690 math, 700 reading, and 740 writing. I really expected math to be my highest since it's what I'm strongest at math in school and I did not expect my reading to be that high since I've never scored well on reading in standardized tests... will my math score hurt me too badly?

Something I really liked about West Point was that they take the high scores for each subcategory. I really thank that helped me end up with a LOA and later appointment. I don't think a relatively small difference in some scores will have a devastating effect on your chances, for example (English/Writing are obviously not my strong suits ):

At the time of my LOA, these were my stats:

ACT Score:
Math: 34
Reading: 33
English: 26
Science: 32
English/Writing: 26

Senior in high school, junior in State College
70+ credits of college, I received an AA degree roughly around the time as well...a full year before my high school diploma

3yrs of high school student government; one yr as Vice President
National Honor society/Key Club
SLS Attendee
Boys State Attendee
~300hrs of community service (its probably more like ~1000hrs by now)
Numerous academic awards, including perfect scores on the FCAT, as so forth
3ys of JV Cross Country (I'm pretty slow comparatively )
2yrs of JV Baseball, 1yr of Varsity Baseball; lettered once
3yrs of travel baseball

I was also different because I have collegiate activities as well:

4.0 GPA in college
One of the four Presidents of a college student government (representing some 25,000+) students [Yes, there are actually four Presidents, each in charge of one of the college's campuses]
Member of three other campus clubs

I think being the President of a collegiate organization really benefited me, not just on paper, but as a talking point during interviews.

I also had/have two jobs: one working for the college and one working for a local business

What can I say? I like to stay busy !!

3 yr letter in baseball

School clubs, varsity band, community service. I was not a re recruited athlete.

For my SAT I got 640 verbal, 650 math and 710 writing.
For ACT I got 28 Math, 35 English, 28 Science, 30 Reading.

Your math will definitely not hurt you. 690 is a great score.
Your reading score is a bit low on the ACT. How many times have you taken it? I don't really think your reading score will weigh you down but if you're really worried about it try taking the ACT again.

I'm taking the ACT again next weekend to hopefully raise all of the subscores aboves 30. Any tips for prep? I didn't prep at all for the SAT or ACT before, so I really don't know what to do and I feel like it would be a waste to buy a prep book so soon to the test.

I have a problem with the ACT because one has to be able to read and answer the questions in very little provided time. I found the reading ACT much easier than the SAT CR but I still only scored a 24. My suggestion to you is to practice skimming over the article quickly and when answering the questions look for the wrong answers and not the right one to narrow the question down. If I am wrong anyone please feel free to correct me.

I actually did very little prep for the SAT and ACT as well lol. I think it's just important to remember to answer quickly and to constantly remind yourself to go fast and only read what you absolutely need to read. Good luck.
