We are flying in for the Open House for the Class of 2015 in a few weeks...
but are arriving a day early and were hoping to take our son into NY for a half day tour (Ellis Island, Ground Zero...). Does anyone have any suggestions on a tour company, or should we just take a cab? We are stying on Long Island. Thanks so much.

Sticky

There is a really informative "sticky" at the top of the USMMA forum page named "Out and About on Long Island and NYC" that has some great info about visiting the area.

I am not sire if you are aware that Ellis Island may take a full day. There is always Circle Line and many walking tours. If you search the web and need more info, feel free to PM me.

Go down to Battery Park, (free) - ride the Staten Island Ferry -roundtrip, (free). See the Statue of Liberty from the ferry (free). Ride the LIRR from Great Neck to Penn Station and then ride the subway! (cheap)

There's a hop-on/hop-off double decker bus that will take you near to all of the sites and then you decide if you want to get off to look around. The bus has a downtown, uptown and all around town loop. I live in NYC and I have taken the tour. It is fun. Link below.

NYC tour

We took our kids (21 & 18) on the 3 hour Circle Line Tour around Manhattan, It is 1 hour too long. Stick to the one hour boat ride. Check out Chelsea Piers as well and the Entrepid Museum. There are lots of good restaurants on the upper West side (above 78th st) that have outdoor seating if the weather is nice and the prices and food are much better than the tourist areas. Go to the Museum of Natural History which is just off of Central Park. I grew up in Manhattan and I still like seeing these places. Have fun and don't rush.

This would be my suggestion as well- then go to Katz Deli on Houston Street for the worlds greatest Pastrami sandwich! "Send a Salami to your boy in the Army" http://www.katzdeli.com/
