Do any BGOs here know that it will be TWes from here on?

It looks like there was a recent mass mailing of TWEs from the academy this week..fortunately I have not received one and am still waiting to hear from USNA. Has USNA released any information regarding appointments? Has all the spots been filled and from now on is it either waitlist or rejection?

The latest roster shows a few WL's, no new offers, a lot of TWE's

When was the roster dated?

Were you referring to the batch that (supposedly) went out last Tuesday?

My son heard yesterday that one of the competitive nominees on our MOC's slate got a TWE. Sad for him, but hoping that is good news for us. Gonna keep waiting optimistically.

If some have not heard yet on what their status is could that mean that admissions is waiting to hear back from appointed people whether they accept or decline the offer? What I don't really understand is the difference between being "on the bubble" and being waitlisted. Sorry if this is a repeated question. Also, I guess it really is just speculation because some BGOs say that there are still BFEs being sent out (though mostly TWE) and some say there really isn't.

We're confident that additional BFEs are out there, as DS received a call from our MOC on Monday saying that the USNA appointment was his, and we could expect a letter from the academy in a week or so. Haven't gotten anything in the mail yet, so we'd be frantic as well if we hadn't gotten the call first! DS received a waitlist letter from USAFA on Friday.

Thank you for the reassurance. You obviously know how torturous this waiting is. Congratulations on the appointment. Your DS must be thrilled! Good luck to him :D

The purpose of the WL is to have a pool of candidates from which to offer additional appointments if fewer people than expected accept their appointments. Given that the date for accepting is (I believe) May 1, I seriously doubt that USNA is holding up TWEs or BFEs based on the decisions of those currently holding appointments.

Those currently waiting are described as being "on the bubble" because they are all very competitive candidates who are, sadly, vying for too few spots. At this point, a very small number can expect an appointment. The overwhelming majority of those still waiting are likely to receive a TWE or WL letter. "On the bubble" is just a term that I used in a post to try to convey that those left are very competitive . . . it's not an "official" USNA term so please don't read too much into it.

Does this mean that if a candidate that received an appointment offered from a local MOC slate turns down the offer between now and May 1, the appointment is more likely to go to someone on the WL than the next in line on the MOC slate? DD has not received a TWE or WL letter.....yet.

Despite the deadline for acceptance/rejection for an appointment, I'm guessing that the academy keeps a reserve of waitlisted candidates for the handful of those who immediately "accepted" their appointment and, later, change their mind for whatever reason. After all, the academy cannot force them to show up for I-Day. I imagine there are some who get cold feet or get a "better" offer.

I'm sure that happens in a few, rare instances.

First, I would imagine that very few people turn down appointments before April 15, the date by which USNA and most civilian schools provide notice to applicants. Even if they did, USNA always expects some turndowns. The question for WL candidates is whether the number of appointments turned down is greater than EXPECTED. IOW, like every other school, USNA offers more appointments than they have slots, knowing some will be turned down. They just can't be sure how many.

Thus, I don't believe USNA makes any decisions between now and April 15 based on declinations of appointments during that time because they aren't in a position to know if the turndowns are greater or fewer than expected. Those still waiting won't be affected by the decisions of others . . . yet.

Those who receive TWEs are done for this year. Those who are WL'ed must hope that more people than expected turn down their appointments. Last year, very very few came off the WL and even then notification wasn't sent out until mid-June.

Sometimes, as USNA sees the acceptances/rejections come in, they will start sending TWEs to WL candidates along the way. In other years, they've waited until the very end and notified everyone at once. USNA says they don't rank WL candidates -- for whatever that's worth, which begs the question of how they determine who to take from the WL. Sorry, but I don't have an answer for that.

For those who decline at the very last moment or don't show up . . . those slots typically go unfilled. There are always rumors of unsuccessful candidates showing up on I-Day and being plugged in. They are false.

See my comments above. WL candidates will be offered slots if the number of appointment turndowns (whenever they are received and whatever the reason) exceeds the number of expected acceptances. It's not as if USNA offers 1250 appointments for 1250 slots. They offer some higher number b/c they know there will be turndowns -- to attend NROTC, another SA, a civilian school, etc.).

That may be why USNA waited so long last year to notify WL candidates -- I can't say.

However, it is EXTREMELY rare for someone to be offered an appointment at the very last minute -- such as the day before I-Day. As noted, if someone doesn't show up, the slot goes unfilled. It is very sad in that the slot didn't go to someone who would eagerly have showed, but these cases are very rare.

I agree with what you say. I'm sure the Naval Academy has statistical data, accumulated over the years, on the nominal number of rejections they get. Let's say they typically get 200 rejections. If their target is a class size of 1200 appointees, then they will probably issue somewhat UNDER 1400 initial appointments because they certainly do not want to run the risk of going over. It's much easier to send out belated appointments should they get more rejections than anticipated.

With the state of the economy and the rapidly rising tuitions at colleges, I'm guessing that the rejection rate is at one of the all time lows. Couple that with the size of the Brigade being larger than desired and nearly 20,000 applications - this will probably go down as one of the most competitive years in history. And, I predict the size of the Class of 2015 will be under 1200. If not, the Class of 2016 certainly will. We're going to have an under-1200 class very soon if the retention rate stays the way it has. They can't continue to pump 1200+ into Bancroft Hall (as they have been) without them having to start sleeping midshipmen in T-Court. Did you know that some roommates are not even in the same class? That is absolutely unheard of! That's insane! What's next, cats sleeping with dogs? Anarchy! :shake:

number of offers accepted by the prospective student / number of offers by the school = Yield

Most schools have yield prediction down to a science.

I heard that last year West Point sent out more appointments than there were slots just like you are talking about for USNA and almost no one turned down their appointment. Was told they had to put 3 plebes to a room and that this had never happened to Westpoint before! I wonder what USNA would do if that senario happened to them???? Was also told they gave out less appointments this year to make sure this didn't reoccur.

I'm not very familiar with West Point accommodations, but 3-plebes to a room is the norm at the Naval Academy. (at least, these days) In fact, there are some 4-man rooms. But the 4-man rooms have two sinks and two showers.

Did the letter your DS received state "waiting list" or just simply state if a vacancy occurs, they will notify him? I received a QNV letter from USAFA, I was just wondering.

@Memphis...my Plebe son is one of those who has had 3/Cs (one last semester and one this semester) in his room...He does not like it!
