Does anyone have first hand experience with the motels right in Highland Falls?

Have you stayed at the Econo Lodge or the West Point Motel? Or another property in Highland Falls?

DS and I just visited West Point and stayed in Newburgh. The Ramada where we stayed was very clean, quiet, comfortable. However it took about 40 minutes to get to and from the academy due to the distance and a detour on 9W.

We'd like to stay closer to the campus on our next visit but wanted some feedback, particularly on how quiet these places are.

Any comments will be most welcome! Thanks in advance.

I have stayed at the West Point Motel twice. We stayed there for A Day because we wanted to be close and not spend time driving back and forth. Think 70's motel with a wireless connection. :shake: Rooms are clean but not fancy. It was very busy on A Day but I do not remember it being particularly noisy. Usually I stay in Fishkill because you can get a nice room for the same or, on special occasions such as A Day or football weekends, less money.

We have not stayed in Highland Falls before, only Goshen or Fishkill. The drive from Goshen is not bad and we don't mind the travel time from Fishkill either. We stayed in Fishkill for A-Day and it was very convenient to shop (Walmart) for school supplies for my cadet while he slept. Last year they were not allowed to do anything other than go out to eat on each end of the trip to and from the hotel.

Should have included that the staff was friendly and accomodating. The atmosphere on A day was actually pretty neat because everyone staying there had a cadet and there was excitement in the air. It is also a good location if you think your DS/DD may bring friends wth him or her.

Recently stayed a couple nights at the West Point Motel when DS had overnight visit. Room was large and clean..nothing fancy, was maybe a few other rooms booked..so was quiet. I always request top floor..because can't stand hearing noise from above. was able to park right outside of room. Its very close to the main gate..stayed there because it was so close and had never been to the area before. I would stay again, the price is very reasonable. Booked a room in Newburgh for Rday, since it had a large pool and there will be a younger DD with.

Stayed at the new Holiday Inn last june. Very clean and convenient to post. They offer a military and govt rate

We first stayed at the Ramada Inn "up the mountain" for R Day. A 30-40 mind drive to WP. Too far away for us. Then we stayed at the Econo Lodge outside of WP for both A Day and Parent-Plebe Weekend and we were very satisfied. An older, but clean motel, has internet and very friendly, helpful staff. Also has a breakfast room with the basics to get you started in the morning and close enough to town to pick up food, etc. or have stuff delivered.

Its a bit higher in price that the motels up the mountain, but I prefer to be closer so DS can stay with us longer and it takes only 10 mins to pick him up or get him back.

I give it a :thumb:

We've stayed at Econo Lodge several times...again, nothing fancy. Rooms were clean and the AC worked...what else do you need? All of the HF hotels jack up the prices for major weekends (football, Aday, Rday, grad, etc), but for me, the convenience of being right there by the gate was worth it. If you are picky and need a really snazzy hotel, this is not the place for you; but if you just want clean and convenient, go for it!

How About the Thayer Hotel?

Any love for the Thayer Hotel?

We've stayed at several of the hotels in Highland Falls: Holiday Inn, Econolodge, and the Thayer.

The latter is our favorite. Rates vary, depending on the season and what is going on at West Point any particular day. Prices range from very affordable to very expensive. It is a beautiful and historic facility.

The property has one advantage that may be attractive: it is within the confines of West Point proper; i.e. within security. Once inside, you can drive, walk, or use the West Point buses to get around, without having to drive thru security checkpoint.

This is our favorite place to stay, and when we do, we walk just about everywhere. The walk from the Thayer to Grant Circle (Admissions) is about a mile, and quite pleasant. The Plain and West Point Club about 1.5 miles; and the cemetery about 2 miles.

If you are affiliated with the military, or already have a cadet at WP, you are eligible to stay at the 5 Star lodgings. One 5 Star is next to the Visitor Center, and there are other 5 Star facilities within West Point. This is a very affordable option.

Beautiful place but $289 per night vs. $124 for West Point Motel--yikes! We're looking at an 8 night stay so it amounts to a big difference.

DS and I had a wonderful dinner at the Thayer Thursday night--sat overlooking the Hudson River and everything was great. Kept thinking of the main character in Honor and Duty staying and eating there prior to R day. I don't think West Point puts cadets up there any more!

Reminder that Cadets are not allowed to leave walking privileges area unless they are signed out on Pass/OPPs. Cadets know this area and getting caught outside of it is not worth the slug. Any hotel in Highland Falls and Fort Montgomery is within the walking privileges area.

Last year cadets were allowed to stay in Fishkill and Newburgh for A-Day. There were detailed official instructions about what they could or could not do.

Yikes is right! The Thayer can be spendy at certain times. Certainly paying for convenience.

Just consider it, because it can be less expensive at times. For example, we'll be there next weekend for the parent leader conference and the Sandhurst competition, and the rate is approx $130 per night.

Last year, we were there for the March Back and for A-Day; stayed elsewhere in between. The March Back rate was $130, while the A-Day rate was over $200. We made the reservations 8 months prior.

Yes, there is a price for convenience and flexibility.

Mike,

Thanks for the info--it's good to know that the rates vary so much. Hope we'll have the chance to stay there another time!

Cool that you'll be there for Sandhurst- is your cadet competing? My son's plebe tour guide is on his company's team and DS had lunch at the team's table.

Yes, son is on the A-1 team. He has also hosted several candidate visitors in recent weeks.

For A-Day we lucked into a B&B that someone else posted on Plebe-net as cancelling. We really liked staying there and ended up staying there for PPW and reserving for graduation (yes people start that very early). It is about 15-20 minutes over the mountain from WP and was a nice place to chill with our cadet.

If you're looking for some great inns (Hudson House) or Bed & Breakfasts check out my old hometown, Cold Spring. It sits directly across Hudson from West Point and is a 20 minute drive (crossing Bear Mountain Bridge). Beautiful scenery, quaint village shopping and a great place to spend a weekend aside from staying in chain hotels. Also, if staying in Fishkill hotels, it's a nicer drive to go thru Cold Spring and across river that way vs. going thru Newburgh/Beacon. Just my opinion!!

Agree with that! It is such a beautiful drive---wish I could stop and explore all of those big mansions! In August it looked like there were horse-drawn carriages going through town. Cold Spring is lovely!
