My son's portal says he has an offer pending. Thats great! As we're now sitting down to narrow down college selection I have a question about what exactly is paid by the Army and what our cost will be. Our top choice is the flagship state college in Illinois with Tuition of $11,000 and "fees" of $3,500. Does Army pay these fees along with tuition, books and stipend? I guess we will find out soon enough but if anyone know this I'd love to hear from you.

You have to contact the financial aid office to find out exactly. Also talk to the ROO at the school. Some schools have a policy that they will pay for X, Y, and Z. Other schools give you a "Presidential Scholarship" to pay for the same thing (like room and board). The ROO should know this, but you should also check with the financial aid office, because you'd be surprised that some ROOs don't know about the "unwritten" scholarships handed out by financial aid offices. Also, the "Presidential Scholarship" is typically not advertised on the school's website. BTW, many state schools don't offer anything.

Yes, talk to Finaid and your ROO. Personally, if my DS receives an AROTC scholarship, I know his fees are included(checked with finaid and also used the cost of attendance information vs information ROO provided) The room/board grants/scholarships vary by school. We have only dealt with state schools and both have generous room/board offers to ROTC and SMP cadets. The schools we are working with are in Ohio and Kentucky.

Good luck and congradulations to your son!!

In our case the Army pays all tuition and fees. At my DD's college, there are about a dozen different types of "fees". They are all paid for each quarter by ROTC as part of the tuition payment.

I'm in the wrong state, Ohio! Penn State used to pay room and board at one point, but apparently decided to drop this benefit a while back. I understand that WVU is also generous with ROTC cadets.

Like we said, it varies by school. Also, isn't there a sticky up top of this forum for schools that offer room/board? I think I've also seen a page on the GoArmy, under individual school in their search links, that give info by the school. Its a nice perk if the rest of the school fits for you, especially since at some schools r/b is more than tuition!!

The state school that my son attends offers nothing extra.

Books will be paid back via direct deposit into the cadets account after they passed the AFPT and contracted. That's when the stipend will begin as well.

Yes, there is the room/board sticky. But then I learned that there were unpublished "Presidential Scholarships" at some schools that aren't listed in the sticky post. Basically, the way it works is that the ROO "works" with the financial aid office and says, "This is a really great kid, and we really like him/her. Let's give her a scholarship." Even for folks who are not offered a national AROTC scholarship, I would still talk to the ROO and see if they can help eek out some money from the financial aid office. Doesn't hurt to ask!

Your contract is going to say "Tuition and Fees". If room and board is higher, you have the options of using the scholarship to pay room and board. You'll receive stipend and book money. Anything else is between you and the school. If you haven't heard it before, talk to the ROO.

At the University of Kentucky ROTC pays Tuition and Fees and the university throws in a room and board package.

Medical Insurance

Medical coverage may be an exception to various fees paid under the AROTC scholarship. It is required by most schools but the cost (at least in our case) was not covered by the AROTC.

My wife started a new job which does provide medical insurance for family members, and this satisfied the school.
