Osama bin Laden is DEAD

It's all over the news! What do you think the implications of this will be on US policy? Also, has anyone heard of the exact details of his death?

It was a helo insert of SEALs. Mansion in Pakistan is where they got him.

On a West Point note, I'm seeing from facebook that cadets are rioting and that rumors about TEEs being cancelled are spreading like wildfire...

I've been catching some bits from CNN, initially it was reported that it was a drone but now it's confirmed it was US special forces.

I'm worried that there will be an increase in Al-Qaeda attacks following this.

I was thinking that too. However, I feel that, as long as we maintain top-notch security, we can thwart whatever piece-of-feces plan they can come up with.

USNA mids also celebrated their SEALs in T-court. Appears alot of patriotism flooded the campus.

Osama bin Laden DEAD

Today is great day to be an american, thanks to all wear the uniform of this GREAT country the United States of America.

I am extremely proud of you all,

RGK

BillSL, according to CNN it was SEALs under CIA operational control. It was a helo insertion so it's possible the Army's Special Operations Aviation Regiment provided the helicopters.

It was certainly a joint effort to get him :thumb:

It was a Special Forces Joint Operations team based out of Fort Bragg, NC that did the job! :thumb:

Rest assured that you actually have no idea of who was actually was involved, nor will you.

This was a mission that underwent an overwhelming amount of planning and practice. It was conducted by Seal Team 6, also known as the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group, the top and most elite Navy Seal Team. President Obama and CIA and military officials knew, since March and maybe even longer, that he was hiding in the mansion in the Pakistan town. President Obama purposely had Seal Team 6 hold out until yesterday, May 1, so that the Seals would have enough time to practice and master the assault. (The assault was actually supposed to happen on Saturday, April 30, but was delayed another day for reasons not mentioned by officials). Seal Team 6 actually practiced the assault several times in the United States at their base, Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, before coming back to the Middle East to perform the operation. The raid lasted about 40 minutes, and Bin Laden was killed in the last five minutes by a headshot. A few dozen Seals of Seal Team 6 carried out the mission under the watchful eye of the CIA and the support of helicopters.

It is postulated that what led CIA and military intelligence in finding his hideout (the mansion) was that the mansion was one of the very few, if not the only, compounds in the Pakistan town to not have any communicative equipment, such as a telephone or computer, which are devices whose signals can be detected by CIA and military technology. Bin Laden's body was brought to Afghanistan and "buried at sea" from aboard the USS Vinson after a ceremony was held in accordance with the Islam culture.

That's one theory.

That's one theory.

I may not be in the military, but I have studied the media. I think that scoutpilot is spot on. Until the mission reports are declassified, or when (if ever) the White House/Pentagon/CIA releases any information we will not have many of the intricate details.

Everything short of what has been confirmed by the US Government is just speculation. (Unless someone is leaking classified materials, which strongly worries me)

I had a discussion with a friend of mine... Are you guys aware of the circumstances of the kill shot? (Ie. was he armed? Critical moment? I know they were told to "try to capture him".) I read in Reuters that he did put up a fight... but he did not necessarily shoot at the U.S. Forces.

And thanks, Stopper, for that info. I'll take it as the truth if anyone asks me what happened (most people at my school ask me about what happened when the U.S. is involved in an issue). Interesting how just last week we had to do a presentation on "10 years of Sep/11" (I was responsible for the war in Afghanistan analysis). When someone asked me "Where is Osama now?", I'll I could answer is: "I don't know. Nobody really knows otherwise he would've been captured or killed already."

4 days later, they found him.

EDIT:
I'm worried that there will be an increase in Al-Qaeda attacks following this.

Dude, same here. Not to get off on a tangent or anything, but I was all set to go to bed early last night and get some rest for the test, when I saw the news! Let's just say I was tired going into the test this morning. But nonetheless, this is a milestone that really is a win for justice.
