Official Candidate Class of 2016!

I just recieved an email from my blue and gold officer, stating the list for official candidates is being populated for CO 2016. :biggrin: I already have my interview scheduled for June 23 ( almost a week after NASS) I'm so excited to begin this process! Does anyone happen to know the earliest date you can complete the DODMERB physical? I have a presidential nom, and my CFA will be done at NASS...so I'm hoping to get this all done by the end of July.:thumb:

Congrats on already making the "official candidate" list for 2016 :smile: You are already well on your way to completing your App!!! The Academy will send your name to DoDMERb when a certain percentage of your application is completed( I believe it is between 60-75ish). I highly encourage getting your application in early since USNA has rolling admissions and can give you an LOA as early as the end of August!! It is a huge relief to get that letter because then you know all you need is a nomination(and in the OP's case they already have one) The year will go by faster then you will know it. NASS seems like yesterday and its almost the final countdown to I-Day for 2015! Congrats again and good luck to all future Candidates:thumb:

Just a quick question but how did you get your presidential nomination so early?
Also, if you get an email from your Blue and Gold officer, does that mean you're an official candidate?

I sent in the form last week with the attached information from my dad. I honestly didn't think that the academy would process it so quickly,as the site said July. :smile: never hurts to be early though!

Well I have been in contact with my BGO since november of sophmore year, but this email specifically was titled "Candidate Status" stating that my name was now on the list of candidates for 2016,with instructions to interview. I do believe that my acceptance to Summer seminar put me on that list though. Maybe a ALO or BGO could speak for this, but I believe that if you are accepted to a summer seminar, your are automatically considered a candidate (which makes sense) are you attending NASS?

Well your nomination has certainly been an eye opener for me! I was told to wait until the fall to apply for nominations. Whats bugging me the most about the whole process is the interview and the essays...which I assume are usually the biggest hurdles for nominations haha
 
While registering for NASS also will register you as a pre-candidate it does not automatically confer Official Candidate status. Generally, in order to become an Official Candidate you must submit information that indicates you are scoring above the minimum qualifying levels on the SAT and ACT exams. Currently those scores appear to be: SAT Math - mid 600s, Verbal - about 600; ACT Math - 26, verbal - 25. Keep in mind that these are qualifying scores to become an Official Candidate; to become truly competitive you need to be scoring significantly higher.
 
Most congressmen and senators applications are due sep/oct. And they won't start picking until after their dates. Make sure you go to your representatives' sites for specifics. Each is different.

so am I confused on my status then, would I be considered a pre-candidate? Although I did not see this term in my BGO's email, I understand completely.
What confuses me, is that my scores are both currently 580 for verbal and math, act- 25 in both sections. Though my ecs are very strong.

I'm from Cali-25! that's so cool, we're close! I am going to usafa ss session 1, usna session 2, and girls state after.

So busy :) I don't think we overlap :(

NASS attendees: continue your application and continue to apply for all congressional nominations. Also, retake SAT and ACT tests to improve the scores.

Also, consider also applying for ROTC scholarships and civilian colleges. Have good backup plans in place. A lot of things can change in the next year. Desire, medical status, etc.

Keep your eye on the ball and remember that attending NASS or USAFA SLS gets your foot in the door.....but, continue to improve in all areas to keep that door open.

You are about to jump on a roller coaster ride...it's a lot of fun, very stressful and can be very rewarding.

I am a bit confused. I have been accepted for NASS session 2. The website states that "If you have applied for our Summer Seminar program, please do not submit a preliminary application." Is there something I should be doing between now and summer seminar except for retaking the SAT's and ACT's? I have been working on my fitness, etc.
 
"Official" Candidate

Dear 1964BGO:

My son (as of May, 2011, a high school junior) received a Candidate number with his NASS invitation letter, and then accepted/registered for NASS. He also designated the Academy to receive his ACT/SAT scores directly when he signed up for the exams (scoring markedly above those you list below). He sent letters to his nomination sources and is awaiting the last of the three applications to come in the mail (the fourth application, from the VP, appears to be online only). The JNROTC instructor at his school referred him to a navy lieutenant to get his BGO's name and contact information, and my son is now about to contact his BGO this week.

Is he not an "Official" Candidate? What else does he need to do?

Once you receive a candidate number you are an "official" candidate.

From the USNA Admissions website:

"A preliminary application must be submitted to become an official candidate for next year’s entering class. If you have applied for our Summer Seminar program, please do not submit a preliminary application.

After being designated as an official candidate for admission, all applicants will be notified by mail. Within your candidate letter will be important instructions on how to proceed with the application process (sent no earlier than mid-May)."

Just keep working on the SAT/ACT scores, keep up the grades, work on lining up your teacher recommendations and apply to all nomination sources.

Looks to me like you're on top of things.

BTW - for those who are worried about not getting invited to NASS my DS was turned down for NASS (we are from MD) and ended up with a LOA.
 
Steph: Please not the disclaimer "Generally" in my response... it well could be that the additional information you provided prompted USNA to award you Official Candidate status. I recommend you check with your BGO for clarification. Best wishes to you.

I am going to that same session.



My BGO told me I won't be in list of names till August.
 
If your MOC's nomination applications are available during the summer, go ahead and get started on them. Your biggest hurdle is usually collecting the letters of recommendations. Every MOC has different requirements. It is best to submit everything to the MOC in one envelope, so collect everything and then send together. Have SAT/ACT scores sent directly from test.

Tip for collecting letters of recommendations:

1. Give letter writers specific instructions applicable to MOC's requirement. (MOC names, addresses, your full name, etc. etc)
2. Include envelope to put letter in. Front of envelope print MOC's name and Letter writer's name c/o your return address)
3. Have them seal the letter in this envelope and sign the back, across the flap.
4. Include another large envelope with your name, address and postage on front so they can mail the letters back to you.

This way you will be able to send everything in together, and the privacy of the letter stays intact.

Good Luck! My DS finished everything for MOC before summer was over (except final ACT/SAT tests) and sent it all in before school started. Trust me, this was a huge relief! For ME too!!! Then he concentrated on college applications... much easier to have completed this ahead of time.

You will be surprised by the nonsense in your head once you become a senior.... It's like aliens have taken over!!! :biggrin:
 
Excellent advice!! I would also recommend that you talk with the English and Math teachers who you want to write your recs and ask if they would mind giving you an email that the Academy can use over the summer to contact them. This way, they can be working on your rec over the summer! Best of Luck!!!!
