hello,

My name is Alex. I am currently applying to USMA and, though Im being discouraged by my guidance counselor, Im quite determined.

Before my junior year, had had "social and academic anxiety". At first i thought it was a joke, but to my surprise I found out that this is an actual issue.

With this issue, my grades and academic career as a whole suffered. I would know the material, but during a test i would freeze up, feel sick and just want to run out of the room (i know.....). Teachers themselves were surprised, how could he have done so poorly if he knew the material. Anyway, during the summer of my sophmore year, I decided to take an intense course on anxiety management, public speaking etc (basically a course that will help me beat this thing, and I DID). now its very hard to fix my GPA.

pre junior GPA : 2.7~

junior year GPA: i picked it up to a 3.1

now i looked at my GPA trend and i've improved in ALL CLASSES went from C's to A/A-'s. its still rising !

i am the captain/ president: model un, model congress, track, founder of the fencers club, debate, captain of debate, president of historical society, state boy.

will west point understand, and see what i overcame? i mean isnt that what they look for? im sorry im just a "little" nervous, and i have no one to turn to b/c my school isnt the most supportive along with my parents.... (sigh)

please help!

alex

Alex,

Your best bet would be to get in touch with admissions and have an interview with your MALO.

West Point looks at each individual case as part of the Whole Person concept.

You must be academically, physically, and medically qualified.

The USMA Prep School might be something you want to inquire into. It is designed to help people like you who have overcome various obstacles (including academic deficiency) become prepared for the academy.

Good luck!

^^ Seriously? Thats pretty harsh to be honest. You can also pick it up because WP looks at GPA, SAT/ACT, and Class Rank for the 60% Academic portion of the application. Looks like you're set on the 30% extracurricular and you can be set on the 10% CFA portion. Just continue to improve your grades, score as high as possible on both the SAT and ACT, and write your essays very well. I didn't take the essays seriously at all and kinda BSed all my college application essays EXCEPT USMA. Admissions won't really look at your struggles but you can try to put it into one of your essays. And yeah, the interview may take that into consideration

I would hate to see USMA or any other service academy waste an appointment on you. I hope you don't seriously consider serving in the armed forces.

Troll... don't listen to him. Explain your situation to your MALO and I think he might understand. And, hey, I think West Point definitely be in your future. If you want it badly enough, good things will happen. You admitted academics may not be your strong point, but, with your stellar extra-curriculars, the prep school might be an option. Then, guess what, you end up at the Academy just like anyone else.

Keep the faith and complete your file early!

Someone needs to get an admin on this guy. And to usmasoontobe, how do you know if you'll ever get to take part in the academy experience too? Elitism is a trait far unbecoming of an officer. Please, lay off.

The only definite way not to get in is to not try. You are overqualified for the prep school so now what really matters is - where do you live? Are you military connect? I always believed that starting off below average academics but then kicking butt shows sign of you growing up and a experience that gives depth to you that someone who has had a 4.0 GPA their whole life may not get. Don't let anyone discourage you but be realistic at the same time, great news is that if you don't get in this year go to college for a year kick butt there and reapply, the only thing that is in your way is how hard you are willing to try. Best of luck to you!!

Also, think of it this way:

If you don't apply, you have a 0% chance of getting into USMA

If you do apply, there at least is a chance.

Go for it, you never know what might happen! :thumb:

pretty harsh response... oh well. usmasoontobe vent your feelings out somewhere else, i dont need ANOTHER person discouraging me from going. Its not going to work.

now on a more serious note, i dont think south hampton is as competitive of a district as NYC for example. so maybe i'll have better chances.

furthermore, i think overcoming problems on your own is exactly what west point is looking for. maybe i'll get in, even if it mean Prep first.

but aside from that troll WHAT DO YOU guys think i should do?

I know of a guy who by the end of Sophmore year had only one club and a 2.0 GPA without a single advanced class. After that, due to a long story, he got nothing less than an A- his Junior and Senior years while becoming active in a variety of extracurricular activities. He is currently in the top 10% of his class at USMA well on his way to graduation. Don't give up. :thumb:

Don't listen to the noise. It's pretty sad that someone would not have anything better to do than to be a jerk to legitimate applicants asking for help.

This guy needs to be :banned1:

OK everyone.
I'm closing this train wreck of a thread until I can get it cleaned up before more posts cause problems.
I'll open it back up when it is presentable.
Thanks to all who have been reporting these posts to me.
