Route to West Point

I would appreciate any help/advice on the route we should take getting to WP on R-day. We are staying in Milford, PA for some family time before DD reports on the 27th. Google maps says it's 1.15 hrs from Milford to WP. After exiting I-84 should we go 9W or 218 south?

Also, the information document says to go through Stony Lonesome Gate. Is that also Gate 6?

218 to 9W tends to work faster. Don't know about the Gate 6, but the Stony Lonesome Gate is on Stony Lonesome Road, right where 218 and 9W meet, so either gets you there.

Last year I posted on plebe-net -- are you on there yet? --asking for exact GPS directions to Stony Lonesome Gate, fussing that I wouldn't be able to find it, and then, come R-Day morning, it was the turnoff on 9W for Stony Lonesome Road that had the GIANT TRAILER SIGN saying "Welcome New Cadets" with a six-foot arrow pointing toward the exit.

Are you asking me if I am a member of "plebe-net -- are you on there yet?"--because if you are, my answer is NO!!:eek: What is it? I this something I should know about; be a member of? I feeling very confused and bewildered with everything that needs to get done, sent in, and packed up!!

You definitely should be a member of plebe-net@west-point.org

There is a lot of info given out and people asking questions and answering them.
And believe me, we are all in the same confused and bewildered boat. But...somehow I believe that our children will make it through this despite this. I am trusting the Army to take care of them.
Of course, I will be staying up nights all Summer wondering exactly how my daughter is doing.

If it wasn't for plebe net and the West Point Facebook page I don't know how I would have survived plebe year!!!:thumb:
I spent summer nights looking for pictures of my cadet (also known as "Wheres Waldo) on Facebook. I was lucky to find quite a few!!:biggrin:

If it's any consolation, my son was spending every spare minute prepping for a major athletic event the week before R-Day when he wasn't with his girlfriend. The small number of things that WP told him he could bring were really enough. He needed stronger sunblock than the issued and said BodyGlide (antichafe for runners), compression shorts, and the Leatherman really helped. But he did his prep in very little time, showed up with two large ziplock bags of toiletries, etc., and his boots and shoes. And they took him.

We heard later that, although there is a required short list of items to bring, that the cadre is not permitted to reprimand those who don't have them: some kids come from backgrounds where they really don't have the $45 for low quarters, and $70 for boots. USMA will take 'em in their underwear, and give them what they need. Enjopy your child in the weeks left - but make sure he or she runs! They really need to be in shape. All else really will fall into place.

Three good sources for information:
1) plebe-net is an unofficial list-serve for plebe parents run by volunteer moderators, which has a lot of good information;
2) Deb Dalton, the heroic, invaluable WP parent liaison, is on the West Point Parents Facebook page and
3) Deb also participates in a Yahoo group that 2014 parents formed unofficially. There are now about 300 2014 parents that participate, and I suspect an equal number that read but don't post. Strongly suggest that if you've met parents, you try the same.

As mentioned, plebe-net is only for plebe parents. The moderators have been around for many years and offer a wealth of information based on their experiences with their cadets, and the info that has been shared over the years. It is an unofficial source of information, but does have some info that may prove valuable. After the plebe year, subscribers to this list are moved to a parent-forum listserv.

I am one of the moderators for the Class of 2014 Parents Group that was created on Yahoo. We have over 600 members, and have formed a tight knit community that will share experiences over our cadet's 4 year journey to May 2014. Yes, we are also an unofficial group. Think of us as a derivative to local state West Point Parent Clubs. I'm also one of the officers of our state's parent club. We've organized events at West Point during sports events and Plebe Parent Weekend, created a class coin for our cadets, shared photos and videos, helped each other thru the high and low points of the academic year, made new friends, shared rides, and even shared our homes with fellow cadets. We're a pretty close knit bunch.

To the Class of 2015 parents: you may want to set up something similar to create a tighter bond with fellow parents, ask questions, and to share your experiences. PM me if you need the details for doing something like this.

Deb is unequivocally a godsend, and the class yahoo group that you helped form has been really wonderful -- I look forward to being on it for the next three years, and am grateful for all the help it has offered us parents.

If any 2015 parent would like to take the initiative, please contact M2inOR by pm as he suggests; they collected a lot of support and emails on A-Day, but if you can do it on R-Day, so much the better!
