- I saw that President Obama spoke at the Coast Guard Academy graduation today.

- I heard it said today that the President speaks at Service Academy graduations on a rotating basis.

- President Bush spoke at the 2006 USMMA Graduation.

Please tell me that Obama will not have to be endured next year at Kings Point.

Your help is greatly appreciated!!! I would like to be able to sleep at night!:rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
Kings Point usually gets left out of that rotation. President Bush was the first President in who knows how long to even set foot on the campus. Wouldn't be surprised to see us "out of the rotation".
 
Do you guys know the usual rotation pattern?

WHEW.....I feel USMMA dodged the bullet....

Personally, I did NOT want anyTHING or anyONE to distract from my DD's hard earned day. It would have been a dificult day with added security and a nightmare parking (this may still be true, however).

Now I know that full attention is on the First Classmen....I wish that we were not in Barney Square...but NOTHING has been usual for the class of 2011 for 4 years.
 
I'm really a little horrified by the previous statements. The President is the Commander in Chief. Anyone should be honored by his presence at a graduation. George Bush was not one of the most beloved presidents but was accorded respect when speaking at the academy. Whoever is chosen should be treated with dignity.

I was just thinking of saying much the same. Whether or not you agree with the policies of the person in the office, which in this case I generally don't, he or she is entitled to the respect the office requires.

I think the issue being voiced here is that having the President speak at a commencement - for all the prestige it gives the school - is really a PIA for the people attending, what with the extra security and limited access to the campus. (Having heard Bloomberg speak, I'm not envious of the 2011 class having to sit through one of his speeches, though.)

I'm not at all sure that was what was being expressed by the posters but I'll let them choose to clarify their own words either way. I will say I agree whole-heartedly with both you and OldAirforce in two specific ways:

1) Whether you agree with the current Presidential Administration or not, having the leader of the free world and our nation speak at graduation is an honor and tremendously prestigious for any Academy. That has happened but once at the US Merchant Marine Academy and if it were to happen again I would gladly go through the additional hassle of the added security. It would be truly special, IMO, if my son were to be able to tell his children and his children's children that the President of our Nation handed him his degree, License and Commission when he graduated from his and his father's alma mater.

2) I too have heard Mayor Bloomberg speak on several occasions and while I haven't found them to be either especially painful or enjoyable to listen too, there is no doubt our current President or for that matter any of our living former Presidents are much more interesting and fun to listen to.

I dont know why, but in a way, I feel like the usmma is cheated out. They are one of the five service academies just as much as west point and USNA and the rest of them. I don't see why usmma would be out of the rotation. They too produce military leaders. Just my opinion though.
 
I'm with OldAirForce. I am OldArmy, so our perspective may be similar. The President is always welcome.

*NO* parent should ever worry that the President of the United States would be coming to any Service Academy to shake the hands of the *PARENTS*.
So, as a parent, sleep well... he wouldn't be coming to shake the hands of any of US.

And, despite incredibly tight security, I don't know of a single parent out there who wouldn't LOVE to see DOT continue with fortitude and expediency getting the infrastructure/facilities, services, and professors to the level we want for ALL of our kids.

I am disappointed that the President does not have USMMA in the current rotation... it inserted KP into the national conversation, as regular people and STUDENTS discovered that there are indeed *FIVE* Federal Service Academies. That always helps around budget time, ya know.

Years ago on a visit to the US Senate, our friends and their kids were riding the little underground train to the cafeteria. Another Senator , as far politically as you can GET from the one from our state, made them feel welcome. Upon asking which state they were from, his response was:

I have liked so many of CPAsteves posts, but find myself respectfully disagreeing with the tenor at the start of this thread.
I kinda think he left his computer logged on, and someone else from one of the OTHER SA threads made the post ;)
 
Well said Zonker. I too believe the Office Of The President Of The United States is worthy of the utmost respect no matter what our political preferences may be! Okay, get ready to roll your eyes here. :rolleyes: Obnoxious Mom Alert! dS actually has shook the hand of our current president! Not many days I get to work that into conversation! :shake: thanks:thumb:
 
I have said this about many Presidents you may not respect the man or the policies but one should resect the office. Now if only the press could honor the same credo.

I feel it is important for me to comment:

My statement was about the LOGISTICS of having a prominant figure at Commencement.

Whether I disagree with policies of the current administration would NEVER enter into the way I treat anyone. I would NEVER DISRESPECT or teach my DD to disrespect her Commander in Chief. (implied)

Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden were just at our High School. Most of our students are from Fort Carson Army Installation. There was ABSOLUTELY NO DISRESPECT....nor should there have been. These soliders and their families are on their 4, 5, and 6th deployments and had just received only 1/2 of their paycheck. There was NO HINT OF DISRESPECT for the two ladies.

I know this was not a PERSONAL ATTACK on me. Please read carefully the intent of all the comments. You may go back and read my original post and check me on this.

This forum provides a SAFE environment for ALL opinions.
 
Moose mom, sorry if my piling on seemed to attack. My post was an opportunity to state my believe ( and embarrassingly ) prolly more so an opportunity to um,,,,Brag! There I said it. And please feel free to read my post again too, lol. Really I did understand your post from the logistics point of view but mostly I thought the thread starter was wanting a fight. When writing....it is important to read the words that are there and try to not imply a voice in the words that are there.

I am teaching Netiquette to my Middle School computer students at this time. Conclusion of the lesson: the sentence above. It is difficult at times.
