First off, for the record, I'm not going to a service academy, I've decided on ROTC.

But I was wondering, does West Point have the same "get out of service free" card if you drop out before Sophmore year begins, or is that a purely ROTC thing.

You can leave anytime before the first day of classes Junior year free of charge.

All of the academies allow you to attend for 2 years before incurring a service commitment.

that's suprising, a year at West Point is a much larger investment for the Army than a year of AROTC, if anything I thought you would incur the service obligation earlier at USMA.

We were always told that it was because the first year at an academy is so different than life the remaining years (or in the real Army) that they want to give you the chance to come back sophomore year and see what life is like when you're no longer putting up with all the rules/regulations of being a plebe. I think the logic is that they'd lose a lot more people during plebe year who would quit during one of those "This place sucks!" times by allowing them to return the next year without commitment and make the decision during a more positive time. In theory, this results in them keeping more cadets overall.

Certaintly makes sense to me.
