will they get taken away or do they also fall into the category of stuff the medical staff looks over and if approved you get to keep through BCT?

you won't be allowed to have it at BCT, however once you get out you can start taking your supplements again. (at least from what I've been told, someone else can correct me if i'm wrong) I'm fairly certain they'll take it away from you at basic, because they don't even let you have stuff like motrin when you go to basic...

While I have some of my own opinions on Omega-3 supplements with recent medical research, I have to ask, why is an 18 year old taking O-3s?

wow, the value of this forum seems to be hitting a low point. One answers with a guess and one guy answers with an amateur doctor question of his own without answering the actual question either. Then on other threads we're often getting the 'adults' trying to lawyer each other over to the point where the Moderators have to keep stepping in so often.

Yo, if you have actually been a cadet and actually know the answer, do me a favor and just PM me. Not going to waste time looking for the non answer answers here. thx.

Luckymacy, You asked a question and one person tried to answer as best as they could and give you the information they knew. I do not understand why you are so mad that someone gave you a guess answer? you asked for help and they are trying to help you. And someone else had a question about them. Just because they didn't answer your question doesn't mean you need to get mad at everyone who posted on the thread. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and speculations. I understand you would like a clear answer to your question, but someone did answer your question as best as they could and most people who post on this thread will give you only that. They will give you their opinions and what they believe the academy will do. No one knows for sure what they academy will do until I Day whether or not they let you keep them. Remember respect everyones opinions and others, cause you are about to be a doolie, you are going to have to respect others whether you like what they say or not. That is all!

I'm not mad. As the OP, I can be disappointed and express as much and clarify what I'm looking for all day long. There's way too much noise in the signal to noise ratio like your typical off tanget post, yes. Mad no. With over 40 thousand grads and current cadets, just looking for one who knows the facts on the subject. Not interested in the 'other types' of answers. thx.

With grads you can get different answers too. The rules today aren't the same as they were, say, 5 years ago.

Anyway, with my post, I saw someone asking what supplements to take to help prepare for BCT. Most of the replies were to not bother, because they won't let you use supplements at BCT. Now, that was geared more towards protein powders and pre-workout supplements, so I cannot say if they don't allow vitamins for sure. I can say that enlisted basic training that they didn't allow anything.

My best answer would to say that no, your son will probably not be allowed to keep them during basic.

Buffalo, good job on answering the question completly. This thread is now complete.:thumb:

Opinion: If the Academy feels you need supplements, they will issue them to you. Leave yours at home or wait till BCT is over.

Now to educate others - Hornetguy, what have you heard about O'3's?

There is recent research that shows O-3 supplements, while able to help with joints and eyes, are immuno-suppressing. Immuno-suppressants are NOT something to have in BCT and 4 dig year.

Lucky, you need to calm yourself down. I've given you answers in the past on forums and PM as you've asked. Amateur doctor? I did hefty primary research as part of my BIOCHEMISTRY degree in O-3s, pharmaceutical drugs, etc. since I was pre-med.

I was a cadet for four years.....that is apparent right by my name. A RECENT one too. As a Basic, supplements are tricky and often on an individual case. As a 4 dig, take what you want legally and mind the rules on supplements from the military policies.

lucky, I have been on these forums since they began. This is hardly a low point. We have many well-informed, well-INTENTIONED, and well-meaning people. Go out and take a walk to chill off.

Lucky, maybe you might want to check out the credentials of posters before 'not being mad.' Hornet's are pretty much impeccable.

No supplements, painkillers, acne meds, etc. at BCT. If you break your nose (as one of my sons did), you may request 2 ibuprofen. Ice optional.
