Hi all,

I just ordered my ds the plebe "Personal Items Kits" from USMMA Navy Exchange and learned a few things I thought I'd pass along...

1. At the end of May you can call the Navy Exchange and preorder and pay for a fan for your ds/dd. The fan will be waiting at the Navy Exchange with their name on it. If your ds/dd doesn't need it, they can exchange or return it.

2. Your ds/dd can purchase a personal printer at the Navy Exchange when they get to KP as well. Some purchase their own, others share the cost of and use of the printer with their roommate. The Navy Exchange carries a continuous supply of printer cartridges for all printers sold by them.

3. For those who's ds/dd are athletes, the USMMA Navy Exchange recently redid their "Nutrition" area so that ALL protein powders, supplements, vitamins, protein bars, etc. are NCAA and military LEGAL. This is nice because it eliminates searching online for nutritional items, trying to figure out what's in them and then trying to figure out if it's legal, not to mention what happens to the components when they are ingested (some components that are legal become illegal when ingested). Shopping at the USMMA Navy Exchange for nutritional items will make that whole headache go away!

That's all I know. Have a great day all!

Concerning the printers.......roommates change every trimester so you might want to keep that in mind if planning to share a printer.

We found that the NEX ran out of 'school' supplies at the beginning of the August tri. We shipped some up right after indoc w/ enough to share. After DS's plebe year, he purchased items ahead of time to make sure he had the needed supplies.

Please tell your DD/DS that you bought these items since I did not and my DS, when reporting for Indoc, was sent to the back of the line until they found his name on the list and told him. He said his memory did not serve him well while in line. Poor guy. To help your kid out - tell him/her what you bought.

Just ordered

I just ordered the personal plebe kit today as well. I told DS that the fella at the NEX was awesome, very friendly and welcoming of our kids.

All but one company have benn referbished with AC so im not going to get a fan.

AC

True all companies but one have been refurbished..... but no guarantee that it will be working!

logistics

If you purchase the personal plebe kits when can you pick them up. Will my DS be able to pick the items up during Indoc or should they be picked up prior?

Last year our personal kits were given to us packed inside of the backpacks we were issued during INDOC. Not sure how they plan on doing it this year though. It might be separate this year or in a different container because of the smaller class size.

NEX

The people working there are fantastic. It is similar to a very small dept store with clothing, food, school supplies, greeting cards, toiletries. etc. The whole nine yards. You will be amazed at parents weekend with the variety.

DS went to sea this last time and NEX was out of sea project covers and they helped us send them to his next American port so that he could finish properly. So if you DS/DD is going to sea soon, have them pick them up a little early in case they run out. Help me out mids, apparently the captain of their ship has to sign the covers ??

Madrid19,

Did you pre-order your kit? If so did NEX tell you that it would be in your issues items?

According to an email from Lane Weissman, NEX Branch Manager:
"The Personal Items Kit will be picked at the USMMA by all entering Candidates on Indoctrination Day (July), at a determined location decided by Command on that day. All Candidates will be receiving pre-order information for the convenience of not having the Candidate handle payment on Indoctrination Day."

I think this is brilliant ! Gone, the days of lugging a fan on the airplane or finding one there. And other kit stuff too... Kudos to whoever suggested that and KP/NEX for implementing it.
