Annapolis to Newport Sail Race

Three USNA NA44's are at the front of PHRF II as of 1:30 this afternoon.

Such fun following the gpsed boats! Wait until they head to Bermuda! Remember, where they are literally may not be where they place. But it's fun cheering into the computer!

Ok, help me here.....which ones are the USNA boats?

IRC I - Invictus

PHRF II - Defiance, Integrity and Swift, all three of which are NA44s.

There is one more USNA boat, but I can't remember which one it is.

From the Annapolis newspaper...

"The Naval Academy continued a long-standing tradition by entering five boats in the Annapolis-to-Newport Race. Three - Defiance, Integrity and Swift - were the old McCurdy & Rhodes-designed 44-footers the academy has used as training vessels for years. Two others - the Transpac 52 Invictus and the Farr 40 Seawolf, are boats that were donated to the Navy offshore sailing program."

Actually, I think the three NA 44s are the newer Mark II version of the 44' USNA boats, not the McCurdy and Rhodes design.

Indeed ... those 44's were purchased w/in the past 4 years. And they ain't cheap!!! Decent racing vessels, but not world-class ... beyond those sailing them!

If you want to check out the 1st boat across the finish line in this year's race, go to www.leopard3.com - 100 feet with a canting keel makes for a true racing machine. Not to mention a crew of 27 or so...

Two USNA NA 44s, Integrity and Swift, neck and neck in PHRF II with 20 miles to go.

Thanks for asking, Jenny! I was so confused when looking at the site. Could certainly tell I'm a landlubber  Hubby, on the other hand, wants to live on a boat after all the kids move out...hope he has fun with that! :yllol:

The McCurdy and Rhodes Mark I boats are still the ones used by the offshore team (Including all three mentioned). The NASS summer sailing program usually gets to use all the nice new Mark II boats - plus, the old Mark I's have a better rating...and thus place better.

Just checked with a crew member...

Defiance and Integrity are NA44 MK-IIs carrying a handicap rating of 1.000/81.000.

Swift is a NA44 MK-I carrying a handicap rating of 1.000/93.000.
