ITEMS TO BRING WITH YOU
You will be issued six Summer Seminar t-shirts, a pair of sweat pants, and a sweat shirt. You only need to bring 1 – 2 sets of civilian clothes for travel and academic workshops. Dress is informal but neat in appearance. Shorts or pants must be tasteful, please do not wear shorts or pants that are tattered, torn, or have holes. Closed toe shoes are required for daily events (i.e. sandals are not acceptable). (The temperatures may be in the 80's, 90's, or 100’s with possible showers, and high humidity. Due to the exceptionally high temperatures in Annapolis in June, shorts are encouraged). Remember, you will have physical training at 5:30am every day without the ability to do laundry.
Be sure to bring:

1. Appropriate athletic shorts (4 pairs)
2. Socks (10 - 12 pairs)
3. Undergarments (10-12 pairs)
4. Towels (2-3)
5. Twin size bed linens (1 set)
6. Pillow and pillowcase
7. Toiletries and shower flip flops
8. Running shoes (You might want to bring a second pair of older running shoes for the Team Building Exercises).
9. Swim Suit. For females, a one piece swim suit is required.
10. Travel alarm clock
11. Photo ID
12. Bring a combination or key lock for clothing lockers.*

You don't really need the 4 pairs of athletic shorts because they will give you some to wear, just make sure not to skimp out on the socks and underwear.

Are we expected to do PT in the NASS t-shirts? Or, are we given an actual PT shirt? I read in another thread how you probably want to do your laundry in he sink.

my DD received 4 different colored t-shirts. she didn't mention which shirt was for which day but it differs per squad.

My son didn't wear any of his civilian clothes last year at NASS, they wore all the t shirts/shorts that they were issued. Also, I recommend packing a black garbage bag to put all the items worn during "wet and sandy"..they were REALLY nasty and not something you'd want to pack next to your clean clothes!! Have a GREAT time!!!!!

You will be given one PT shirt and you will just have to wash it out if you want to. Washing it in the sink didn't really clean it but it subdued the smell a little. I suggest a trash bag for dirty clothes and an extra pair of shoes that you wouldn't mind throwing away after the "wet and sandy" portion. I ended up throwing most of my clothes from the mock sea trials away anyway just because there was no hope for getting them clean

I don't mind being wet and sandy:biggrin: I dig for clams, collect oysters, and catch crabs in the marshes.

I will bring that trash bag though.

Yep..my son loved it too!!!!!! BUT for the ONE who does the laundry..
(in my house its usually me) the trash bag will be GREATLY appreciated!! lol!

Now that Session 1 of NASS 2011 is over, perhaps there is some advice from those who attended, including parents who picked DS/DD up today? I'm two years removed from it, but for those coming a long way, if they can cut down on the gear that they bring with them, it would probably be appreciated.

pack several more of everything - you will greatly appreciate having a nice, clean pair of clothes.

I have to laugh about the guys on girls floor visa versa because formation was on the guys floor and there were girls and guys on both floors so I am not sure how that one would be enforced....

As for the no food prepared in the room...my guys didn't prepare food in the room, but they kept a stockpile of it for session 3 guys. The pantry of stuff was pretty impressive considering it was only a few days worth of stuff...then again they took home about half of everyone's square meals because we didn't want to touch them. The cookies were the only thing safe on the way to watch the Marine drill and even some of those weren't. Wish I could have seen the faces of the guys from session 3 when they opened up their closets.

We found out that DS had packed too much. They gave 5 colored shirts and one exercise shirt along with 3 pair of shorts, sweat pants, sweat shirt and hat. He just needed khaki shorts for first evening drill practice, everything else was provided. Of course the extra pair of athletic shoes for Sea Trials was a must! He had a great time!

Are long khakis even needed?

I plan on arriving wearing a casual polo shirt and short khakis (I don't want to make myself standout wearing a suit or something).I realize some people still believe in dressing up to travel by plane.

my DD flew in last night . she left for annapolis w/one carry-on and came back with an extra 2 plastic trash bags filled with stinky laundry. wear a set of civilian clothes to annapolis and wear the same on your return. loads of underwear and socks are a must but forget the extra athletic shorts and civilian clothes. be sure to have enough room left in your carry-on for all the stuff you will receive at NASS. it will be unlikely that you will fold anything so consider that as well.

Long khakis are not needed. Whatever you wear on the plane will do just fine. Most of the kids arrived with khaki style shorts. Just make sure you tuck your polo shirt in, or they will remind you.

In regards to shorts, the instructions say to pack 4 pairs of athletic shorts yet in this forum it says that you will be issued shorts. My question is, are the athletic shorts you bring necessary or did NASS this year decide not to hand out short and hence you need to bring your own?

NASS provided the attendees with 3 pair of mesh shorts. They were required to wear the issued shorts at all the activities. Any "extra" shorts you might bring would only be worn in your room, but are not necessary.

Just finished Session 1. Seriously, one of the best weeks ever! All you need is a blanket to sleep on, toiletries, a pair of shorts that are a little more formal than denim, a pair of running shoes, a towel, & lots of socks, underarmour, & underwear. I promise you this will work. You will need nothing more!

Just got back as well. Completely agree, the shorts they give you will be used for PT, class room, and dinner, I highly recommend that you bring at least one extra pair of shorts to sleep in as the three pairs will get pretty nasty. I also recommend that you have a system where you wash and dry one pair of shorts during the day, because they get pretty nasty. Have Fun!
