maritime schools

can one transfer into a maritime school such as Mass. Maritime as a sophomore? or do you have to go through all four years at that school to receive a commission?

I'm transferring into the Texas Maritime Academy with 62 hours, but will still have to complete three years in order to receive my license, and to become commissioned in the Merchant Marines and Navy.

Mass Maritime does not have a NROTC Program so I'm not quite sure how one gets commissioned at graduation.

At Mass Maritime you get commissioned thru what was called the MMR (Merchant Marine Reserve) program (I believe it changed names last month but for the life of me I can't remember what the name is now). Cadets take Naval Science courses from assigned Navy Officer/NCO instructors. While there you are eligible to apply for the SIP (Student Incentive Program) which pays an annual stipend of about $8000 (and get instate tuition rates I believe). This program is offered at all of the Maritime Colleges. In addition to MMR commissioning options, SUNY Maritime and Maine do offer standard NROTC programs .

As far as I know Mass. Maritime does allow transfers but you have to apply and forward with your application college transcripts showing previous completed courses comparable to Mass. Maritime. There is a section on their admission page regarding Transfers. Easy to contact them and ask. I think instate tuition depends upon your State of residence not SIP qualification. Along with PLC they are great programs toward eventual Commission.
