About a month ago, I learned about the summer leadership seminar at West Point, it really caught my attention. This week, I learned about boys state and it also really caught my attention. Given that most of the summer programs cost money, I was wondering how you paid for it. Did your parents pay for you? Did you try and raise money and pay yourself?

My sons both attended Boys' State for our state and they paid nothing. They were graciously sponsored by a local American Legion unit and all they asked was that my sons return to a meeting and give them a report on what they did and learned. We had the option of purchasing additional Boys' State t-shirts which acted as their "uniform" and I paid for those because I knew they would need more than two shirts.

It is a wonderful experience and my sons gained so much from it. My oldest son is a senior at a large state university and he still sees guys he met at Boys' State.

West Point really likes to see that you have attended Boys' State.

you have to pay for all the different academies summer seminars - approximately $350 + $Airfare.

Boys State cost $100

$100 seems pretty cheap compared to Oregon's Boys' State. It is more than $300 to go there, but it looks more than worth it.

Go to both if you can!

Boys state will help with your application.

SLS will help you decide if USMA is for you. IE: If you do get to attend SLS and don't like it, you will most likely not do well at USMA.

And while each year the majority of applicants get in without attending SLS, you are ahead of the game in many aspects if you do attend. Early CFA, etc.

Thanks Hawk! One of the hardest parts of going to the SLS at West Point is the fact that I will miss school, regardless of what session I get into. I wouldn't mind missing school as long as it isn't finals. I emailed West Point w/ a few questions regarding the summer seminar and I learned that they might possibly adding in a new session. Which would increase how many people get accepted.

I'm going to Boys State (Saturday actually) on scholarship. The local American Legion post paid for the costs. I think it is $350.

I actually ran into a predicament with finals. Boys State here is next week and it didn't work with my finals. Luckily I told my teachers ahead of time, so I'm taking some early and some after I get back.

Well that's good! I really can't be sure how it will work out until I actually apply and I am near that time of year.

Did they mention which week?

Some schools will allow you to take finals early or make them up for special circumstances like this. But recognize that taking a final late can work against you due to time passing.

Last summer there was exactly one combination of SLS, NASS, and USAFA SS that allowed attending all three with reasonable travel times! So you may have to prioritize (With USMA being top priority, of course!!!:shake:)
