Hi, The issue that brought me to this forum is a 15 year old rising Sophomore.
What I'm looking for is "lessons learned" and how to's in the process of obtaining enterance to a Service Academy. This is the direction my son has wanted for a number of years, and I don't want my lack of knowledge to impede his goal.

Thank You in advance for any and all help in this matter.

p.s
He got roughed up a bit in Academics in 9th grade. He had a mixed schedule, AP's in Math, Soc Stud, and Spanish, with lighter classes such as NJROTC, weightlifting.

I would have to say the biggest lesson I learned in my application process was the importance of simply applying. Never deny yourself the opportunity of an application just because you don't think you did so well academically one year. In my mind, I still think I had mediocre grades all throughout high school but not once did I believe I didn't have the potential to do better. Luckily, I was able to convinve that this was the case to several admissions boards in my applications. However, before I get too off-topic, I would say to tell your son to continue working hard to prove to the admissions board that he has the ability to get back up and brush himself off after he gets tripped up by a few courses.

Best of Luck,

One piece of advice that I would give to your son is apply early. My DS got all of his forms, essays, CFA, medical exams, etc completed asap...he found out he had an appointment early in his senior year and it made for a lot less stress than most. I guess I am not sure that getting things in early helped but I certainly don't think it hurts:) I always thought it showed dedication!!

Good luck!!

CDT Passons,

Thank you for your reply. It will mean more to my son to see this advice in black and white rather than just from "Dad".

Here's to your continued success at the Academy

Thaks for the advice, as my son is in 10th grade, we are looking for the head start to this whole process, sometimes it seems far away and other times like a blink of an eye.
Thanks again

This is a very good point you brought up, because all service academies conduct "rolling admissions." Which is essentially, the earlier you get your application in, the more looks you will have on your file. This is different from most colleges where if your file isn't up to their standard on the first look then you're getting rejected.
