I have something listing USMA's majors, but I can't seem to see business. Is it worded differently, or is there really no business major? It seems odd considering statistics show that over half high school students will major in business. I want to major in business, political science, or law.

Economics is the closest major I know of we have. I haven't heard of any business majors so I doubt we have it.

Thank you, that just seems so weird.

I went when there weren't majors...but went with a mangement concentration- 7 or 8 electives- psych/math/MGT and Engineering capstones/ finance accting. Helped me get into a MBA program due to having the required prereqs- It was a good concentration for me

But....

Why not do something in an Engineering field....Systems, Electrical, Mech...etc. If you make thru school and at least 5 years in the Army- you will get more then enough leadership, decision making education and practical experience. To go from a business guy to a Engineer is hard (doable)...going from Engineer to manager is much easier....Think technical- as you will get management and leadership skills anyway...

If you are looking to get a get a degree that says business- then get an MBA from a top notch school after your BS. If you have to do it as an undergrad- then UPENN and UMICH are very good business schools.

Just wanted to also state that some people just don't like Engineering...If you struggle with math or just don't like it - you certainly do not want to go technical.....there are certainly many other options at West Point.

Great post, Sir. My Economics teacher took this route by earning his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering then he was able to get into Harvard for his MBA. So, it is important to keep in mind that if a specific major is not offered at West Point, I can assure you that with 32 majors to choose from there is definitely enough room to guarantee you get a fair share of the credits toward a Master's Degree in a more specific major not offered at West Point at any other graduate school.

Thanks for the help. I also know somebody who went to WP and then got an MBA at Harvard. I don't think Engineering is for me though.

I thought the same thing when I was going in due to the fact that my grades just were not too hot in high school. However, I was granted with the opportunity to meet many great people here at the Academy and I learned a lot about the curriculum and myself in the process, which eventually led me to choose to pursue a degree in engineering. However, always remember that if you were chosen to be admitted to the academy you obviously have a lot of potential as it is. So, even if you don't think you did as well as your peers in high school, don't think that you can't do as well as them in college because it's a whole different ballpark- for everyone.

I could swear that the WPer who came from my home town that came back home this year and just graduated said he majored in something like Business Management. Now, don't take my word for that because honestly I have no idea what that implies...but I could SWEAR that's what he said...

It is not as much I don't think I can handle it than it doesn't interest me.

I believe there is a Management major at WP. Not sure if that is close to Business or not.

FutureCadetDave,

I was in college admissions for 3 years when I was straight out of my undergrad, and I can tell you that a Business Management major is a very broad-based business field. Yes, it is management of people, but it covers alot of bases. It's part marekting, part advertising, part Human resources, part accoutning, part planning and procurement, at least one ecomonics class; it covers a wide range of business related fields. My question is this: do you have a specific goal in mind that you feel you need to take a business management major? I definitely agree with alot of the other posters on this thread, that you will for sure learn the people management and leadership skills necessary to make you a serious candidate in Corporate America while at West Point and during your Army service. So the next question is... if you're looking to Corporate America when your service commitment is completed, and you already have the management and leadership skills you will need to have, is there a specific field that you'd like to get into that maybe a major at West Point can help to facilitate? If West Point offers a Management major, go through the course catalog and look at the courses that comprise the major to see what kind of management they relate to. Goodluck!!

Curriculum and course descriptions. Also includes Majors in part 4.

Management and Management with honors is listed. It is a behavioral sciences and leadership (BS & L) course.

The curriculum listed looks very much like an undergraduate business curriculum. Looks like it would be a great major for a future army leader, especially if combined with an engineering track (systems especially).

I got the blue book from this link on the forum:

Thanks for the link, GoArmyBeatNavy!!

From what I can see... that's about EXACTLY like what I'd expect a business management program to look like. So, Future Cadet Dave - there's your answer, major in Management!! I love this forum...
