I have been appointed to the USAFA, and I recently I got hit in the face with a branch while walking through the forest. I'm swollen now, and have a few scuffs on my face. It looks bad, but I went through a workout and I can complete everything as fine as before. I'm tending to it, and it should be only swollen and maybe a black eye by the time in-processing comes around. I hope this doesn't endanger my appointment! Any input on anything related to this issue would be extremely appreciated.

I think you'll be fine. If you can keep up, there doesn't seem to be a problem. You've worked so hard to get there.. I'm sure that they understand that. Good luck!

I hope I'll be alright too. my face will probably be a little scabby too I guess. I figure I'll tell the truth. No need for an honor violation right away! or ever for that matter. haha.

Technically you aren't under the Honor Code until you take the oath which happens after basic, but that's good on you for wanting to be honest. The Honor Code is nothing to be messed with.

Honesty is the best policy, but telling a fun story (if you don't mind a little extra attention) may also be a good option to help raise morale. Only do it if you are confident enough to face whatever we throw back at you, but if you are, then your classmates will appreciate the lightening of the mood. Basic is a mental game more than anything else, so doing something to keep you sane is not a bad idea :) good luck and maybe I will see you soon

The true story is pretty funny by itself, depending on how I tell it (and if it gets me turned back on I-Day it will never be funny in any way), but i think I'll just wait and see how I feel about it when I-Day comes around.

On to the more serious side of things. I'm still extremely nervous about my entire situation. It scares me to think that this type of injury may ruin all this opportunity I have at the academy. Let me tell you a little bit more about the injury. I was walking through a nearby forest knocking down dead trees with my friends, I was pushing in one particularly tough one with a couple other friends pulling. It broke off high instead of how the other ones kinda up rooted themselves and the stump swung back and hit me right in the face... hard. Some of these friends freaked out and I was bleeding everywhere. I'm really swollen, from the swelling in my forehead I got a black eye, and there is a big red scuff/scab running from the dip of my nose between me eyes to the center of my forehead. Random scratches are running down my face in other places too. Some of my friends thought it was broken, but I don't think so since it doesn't really hurt that badly.

This is a possibly jeopardizing situation to my appointment, and that scares me a lot. The opportunity of the academy, the opportunity to become a cadet, and the opportunity to one day become an officer in the USAF is the thing I hold dearest in my life. It freaks me out to think this stupid of a thin may ruin it ll for me. Any input, and words of advice, and ideas on how to help heal myself would be appreciated.

I would be very surprised if you got turned back because of it. As long as there is no damage to your brain you should be fine. Try not to worry about it because I really don't think it will be an issue other than not looking pretty for the pics on I-Day.

I doubt it will result in a turn-back... I mean, a scab or scar here and there wasn't grounds for not passing our DoDMERBs last summer, right? Just try to stay away from trees before Wednesday or Thursday, whichever day you get to Colorado Springs (AHHHHHHHH so ridiculously close!) On a side note, I've had a strained neck muscle for a week and a half and my Dr. just told me to stay on Aleve as long as I can and then not worry about it. Basically, if you can still work out/function normally, you'll be fine (I think/hope...).

Anyway, I hope it heals up and can't wait (seriously, longest two weeks of my life) for Thursday!

Thanks for the reassurance everyone! I will definitely take it a little more easy now. I was just freaking out and could only see the bad side of things for a while there. Thanks again!

OP: didn't you read all the warning posted by PIMA and others? When you send in your paperwork, bubble wrap yourself!

One of my twins sustained a mild concussion while cleaning his bedroom just a few weeks before leaving for BCT. What a mountain of paperwork that was! But no problems on I day or later.

why didn't you tell this story earlier? I could've told my mom that! :shake:

Now what happens if I show up slightly sick? I got a pretty sore throat right now, but I'm doing my best to take care of it. I hope I'm just overreacting.

Last year we landed in Denver the day before I day and my son immediately started to sniffle and sneeze. I think the allergies/pollens are different there and he took a few days to get used to it.
I know that doesn't directly answer your question, but basically everyone is going to be feeling out of sorts, between the pollens, altitude, changes, etc. Also, once you get out to Jacks Valley, everyone is going to be coughing up a storm from the dust.
So unless you are really sick and need to go to the hospital, you will be expected to work through it.
Welcome to USAFA:smile:

I would try to get seen today.

Neosporin works wonders on cuts and scratches, should make it heal quicker, too. Keep ice on it, too. Hope to see you in the pictures during BCT. My daughter will be there.
