Does anyone know which boots we'll be issued on R-Day? I'd assume that it will be one of the 3 authorized pairs, and probably not the Bates M-8s because they're the most expensive. Any info?

It's a generic government issued version. No commercial brand.

Aaaaaaand wrong. The Army issues several brands of boots (Wellco, Bates, Rocky, Bellville) and the brand you receive simply depends on what size they have available in which brand.

A PX employee at West Point told me that we would be issued an inferior boot in comparison to the Bellevilles, so I ended up buying 2 pairs of Bellevilles. I figured it would be a good idea to break 2 pairs of boots in and not have to get accustomed to a brand I haven't worn before during Beast.

So we won't be wearing the boots we had the option of purchasing beforehand?

You will be wearing whatever boots you purchase beforehand and bring with you. Before y'all do any field training, you will go through boot issue and by the end, every NC will have 2 pairs of boots. If you brought a pair, you will only be issued one other pair. If you brought both, you won't be issued any and will just read knowledge while your classmates pick up their boots. :thumb:

I did not intend to say that the Army doesn't issue multiple brands.

I saw pair that the ladies at the West Point PX said would be issued on R-Day, and did not find any particular commercial logo or brand on the boot.

My DS was at Beast two summers ago when all boots were issued (none bought beforehand that year). He describes standing on some gizmo that measured his foot and how he distributed his weight. This determined which of the available brands was correct for his foot. In addition, when he tried them on, he detected some movement/slippage so requested a smaller size. He says the boots have always worked great for him - no complaints at all.

I am surprised that Scout has not jumped on this one. Before any equipment is issued, each piece undergoes some form of inspection and trial. Hence the reason why New Cadets were offered 3 selections this year. I would think the ladies at the PX are NOT the ultimate authority or voice of the US Army.

AAFES is a business. End of story.

With all respect, there are differences between the three pre-approved choices in terms of quality, comfort, and expense. (I say this having handled two of the choices. Bates M8 vs Bellevelle 310)

So those ladies may not be that far off!

Do a bit of googling on the various boots and you can see what the active duty types have to say. This year's fav boot will likely be displaced by a new one in the next year or two.

Also, while the boot letter specified the Bates low quarter, if you call the cadet store and ask for a issue low quarter you may get a cheaper brand which was not as comfortable, nor did it fit like the bates. This happened to DS. They were great about replacing it with the bates, but it sure appears to me like there is a chance you will get a generic or "also acceptable spec" shoe/boot.
