Has anybody paid for next year yet? Does anybody know when they are due? How you tried to pay online?

we were wondering the same thing

We were wondering the same thing.
My son seemed to think we will write a check when we get there? I have no clue! I recall reading a post from a year or so ago and someone said that they'd get a bill in June. We have not received a bill for our DS.
I sure would appreciate someone letting you (and myself) know what the amount is, who we pay, when we pay, etc...
thanks for posting this question

I had the same question and called the Academy and was directed to the Fee Office. I was informed that the bills had not yet gone out as they were waiting on news from Washington. What that "news" is they could not tell me.

You will receive a bill in the mail. You use a link on the USMMA website (bottom of the left side menu) to pay for the first trimester and can now use credit cards. I remember the invoices coming later than expected. Each year has been a different fee schedule and there is a different fee for each class so that might be the hold up in the mailing of bills. For my DS, his first tri bill was due 6/26/09.

Do midshipmen at USMMA receive a salary while in school like at the other SA's?

Nope. The other Academies are military schools and part of DOD. Cadets/Midshipman at the Military Academies are on active duty and draw a salary as such.

As kbdax said, at sea you get paid a small (emphasis on small) amount by the company. I dont what it is up to now but I got $18 per day. Most of the ships officers felt sorry for my and I almost literally never spent a dime in port. I also received a few envelopes of cash when I got off my ships. One engineer told me the 1st wrote him a few extra hours of OT with the stipulation that it be passed on to me. Back then it was enough to pay for 2/C and 1/C years.

US$18!! Wow, you were lucky. I got US$11.

But yeah, lots of help from the engineers. On one ship, I was the only cadet, engine and deck. We also didn't have a Day Third. The First paid me OT for weekends and holidays at the MEBA Cadet rate (I believe it was their Penalty Time) out of his own pocket, covering for it with his overtime. It was only a 50 day trip, but I made more money from him than I did from the shipping company. When I left, he told me not to tell the next cadet about our arrangement. He needed another trip to cover what he paid me.

So how else does USMMA differ from the other academies? Sea Year, basically no pay (so I m assuming most have to take out student loans) ...

My son was paid $800 or $900 a month by the shipping companies while at sea. Not a lot, but kept him in spending money for a time.

Logging in 2015, page 13 states: Midshipmen are NOT paid a wage or salary by the USMMA at any time during their enrollment. However, when assigned to merchant ships during their third class and second class sailing period, ( approx. 300 days) ships operators pay midshipmen at a rate of $974.40 per month. ( The vessel operator also covers the costs of meals and related costs aboard the vessel.) The money earned during sea year belongs to the midshipmen but may be used to offset the cost of the midshipmen fees described on page 14. Or used to by their mom a really cool gift, like jewelry.

Ok, I made that last part up.

But I sure am anxious to see what our fees will be for the class of 2015's fourth class year. Back to stalking the mailbox albeit at a much slower pace.

Unofficially I have been told our 2015 fourth class fees will be around 2900. Although they went up it is still a bargain. I know a few classes back would have been thrilled as that amount as it is much less than they paid. Grateful for the other 200k of value we are getting via the United States Government. Sa----lute! Also with that amount a student could easily handle a student loan repayment and gain the satisfaction of paying their own way. At least that is the story at our house! High five!

Question about Midshipmen Fees

Hi. I am the parent of an incoming Plebe and have a question that maybe someone out there can help answer. We are driving to KP and are combining the trip to KP with a family vacation. We are leaving July 1 and will not return home until 3 days after we drop ds off for indoc. Does anyone know when USMMA informs plebe midshipmen of what the fees are and when they are due? I see that we can pay online, but am wondering if our vacation will cause us to miss the fee statement in the mail. I'm assuming that in the fee billing statement there is information on how to pay online. If worse comes to worse, is there any way we can pay when we are at KP for indoc? Or... should we change our vacation plans?

I would not stress about fees. Our DS received a scholarship for the balance of his fees, and the scholarship money was not released to KP until several weeks after the first due date his plebe year. This situation was not a problem. You will receive regular billing statements from KP each trimester, and the second and third statements of the year are more timely than the first. The way I look at it, if they do not give you at least 30 days from the date you receive the statement before the money is due, then they cannot complain if you are a bit late. My advice would be to enjoy your last real family vacation and pay when you get home.

Thanks for the advice. Somewhere I thought I read that m/s fees need to be paid prior to reporting to indoc, but with all the info I've read lately, I could have confused things, misread something, or simply misunderstood.

Rcd invoice last week, paid full balance thru 3rd tri today on-line....painless...send me a PM if I can help..
