Will Thornton Studios be photographing the plebes this summer? Does anyone have information on how to set up an account with them?

Last year, they had a table under the tent on Worden Field on I-Day. This allowed parents to get a sense of the products they offer, and to ask any questions they may have had about their services before going to the website to register.

is there anything cheaper than that? or free? like, if i just want to browse the photos on their website?

I think they have a fee for browsing, unless they've changed that. And then it gets applied if/when you purchase something. There were a couple of Mid moms who spent days ... literally ... in secretive service snapping shots. So if someone(s) want to belly-up to the bar? We called her St. Nushi and ??? (sorry, I"ve forgotten the other angel's name :() God bless 'em both, in any case!

The USNA facebook page puts up an unreasonably large number of photos of everything that involves mids (especially plebes). Seriously, today they put 200+ photos up of I-day (minus 1). It lacks the precision of knowing that it's your son/daughter/their company, but it's something.
According to my Mom there's also a dropshots account where Academy parents put a lot of pictures up, but I don't know anything more about it beyond that.

Thorton is not cheap but they are the only game in town. What sets them apart is they have access and you can either buy prints or the high res. image files and print them yourself. The key with Thorton is to cherry pic those few great images of your Mid and just pay for those.

USNA's Facebook page will have hundreds of images but they are low res. files that will print out as so so 3X prints. Same for the 3 or 4 ladies that go to the yard everyday and post up pictures. They are awsome for doing this each year but you can only download the low res. files.

My 2 cents

Between Thorton, USNA facebook, and the dropshots angles todays Plebe parents will be seaching through thousands of photos for their Waldos. Enjoy those hours of computer time!!!

I found 2 photos of my Firstie (PS detailer) on USNA Facebook photos posted today during Napster/Prior processing thru Alumni Hall:thumb:

They aren'rt that great. You get what yiou pay for. You may see some Plebe during Summer. It it is not worth it for a few glimpses ofyour Plebe

.

Brief thought on Thornton's pics and dvds

Why I'm doing Thornton's even with a Firstie... My son's plebe summer was normal. I agonized over the cost of photos and DVDs but bit the bullet and went for it. Then in the fall, a close friend of his and member of his squad during plebe summer passed away abruptly from a sudden illness. Thanksgiving was spent with him pouring over the photos and videos telling us about his friend, remembering their few months together, with all of us together to comfort him and enjoy his stories.

For us, the money I spent that year was nothing compared to what we received. As a family, we will never forget that mid and his family.

God be with them all in the next few weeks! Lifelong memories being made...

You will need glasses after this summer between FB /Thorton and The Parent Saints on dropbox! Waldo hunting is one of the best plebe parent (make the time go by faster) activities you will do. And even tho expensive and we did not buy all the CD's ,calendars etc ----we did join and bought the poster. Unfortunately as with high schools when one company has exclusive rights to photograph your kid you pay it even when you grumble. It is one of those evils you deal with and go on. Kinda like overpriced graduation invites and only one choice of company to purchase cap and gowns for their graduations. But to see your kid when you haven't talked for 2 weeks and to see they are alive and maybe even smiling---yep its worth it.

Dropbox?

I have been watching Facebook (one pic of DD taking a test so far), and have signed up for Thornton (still waiting for them to get up and running), but have never heard of Dropbox--can someone enlighten me on it? thanks!:thumb:

It's actually a photo sharing site called Dropshots

Some parents who live near the Yard take pictures during Plebe Summer and post on Dropshots - they are amazing! Just click on the links and hunt for your "Waldo" until you're crosseyed! Here are the two I'm familiar with:
http://www.dropshots.com/nushic#
http://www.dropshots.com/USNA2010and07
If you find a pic you like, select to enlarge, then you can copy it to your computer - all for free!

I have to admit - it is easier looking at all the photos without searching for my now former-Plebe.

Best of luck to all the new USNA families!
