We have been advised to get insurance through USAA for our DS. Just wondering what kind of insurance? Doesn't own an vehicle so is it life insurance and/or property insurance. If property insurance, what should he insure besides his laptop? If it is life insurance, how much would you suggest.

Thanks,

Thanks,

With USAA you get free car insurance so there ya go with that
Not sure about the others though.

Our agent recommended we drop DS off our policy. They explained we would still be covered for him to drive our vehicles while home for short visits. We currently have 4 cars insured and will take a break anywhere we can get it. Just as we drop him another brother will be getting his license in 4 months! I loved the illusion of control i had when none of my kids were in diapers and none of them had a drivers license! Now I have 3 driving and I am the one needing the diapers, Holy Crap!

usaa property insurance

USAA has a basic property insurance policy that covers laptop, class ring, clothing, etc. with a $3000 basic coverage limit for about $4 a month. Came in handy for us when DS returned from Sea Year to find his choker whites and summer whites stolen from his baggage that was left at KP in the baggage lockers. DS says there is a new system in place at KP to help prevent the theft which had become quite common.

Free auto insurance would be nice but does not happen thru USAA. We did not drop DS from auto policy but got a reduction so he could drive when home.

I don't know about free auto insurance, but our premium for DS will go WAY down the day he enters KP. We already have USAA, and the reduction in premium is phenomenal. We have had USAA for all of our insurance needs for many years, and we have found them to be excellent.

Yeah, like the drop I had when my daughter turned 21 (non KP but living at home while in college).

highly recommend that your student go with USAA. As a parent, unless you are a USAA member you cannot "get" insurance for them. They have to call on their own.

USAA offers auto policy (once they are allowed to have a car at KP during senior year) that no one else can beat.

They also have "renter" insurance which covers everything in their possession at school, i.e., bike, laptop, uniforms, etc. Even if theft is not a problem, there is always the possibility of things being destroyed during sea term while in storage, i.e., Prosser Boat House fire a few years ago.

The USAA property policy my son had was about $40 a year, his auto insurance on a new car was only $250 per six months. USAA knows military, and knows how to adjust prices. They also get a discount because they are Midshipmen.
