I am totally brand new to this nomination process and had a few questions concerning the VP nomination...

- Does the vice-president DECIDE who gets his nominations? Or does the academy decide for him? (I've heard the latter but wasn't sure)
- The application for his nomination asks for only personal info(name, SSN, etc.), how does he base who the nomination is given to?
- The personal letter that I will be sending in, what should it include? And is this what the VP/his nomination committee bases who the nom goes to?

Thanks for all the help! Can't believe I'm already applying for NOMINATIONS (well the VP one is my first, but more to come:thumb:)! Quite exciting. Thanks again!

It is very important for everyone to apply to the VP for appointment. However, the reason is not probably what you expect. Historically, the VP appointment is usually awarded to an individual who, through no fault of his own, was unable to secure a nomination through the normal MOC process. It does not go to the most qualified candidate in the entire country.

As you have noticed, the VP gets very little information about the candidate. The VPs office is very very heavily 'influenced' by the CGOs recommendation. The actual mechanics of the selection is not really material (in other words, I don't know).

Ok thanks! I think I get what you're saying... I tried to read around some more to find out also so I think I get the simple basic idea.

Thanks!

SemperExcelsius, you asked:
- The personal letter that I will be sending in, what should it include?
Her is an example from USMA's admissions website of the format for the letter requesting a nomination from your MOC and the VP:

I hope this helps. I admire you for considering the Service Academy route to military service. Many of the answers to your questions can be found online. We will be happy to help point you in the right direction anytime you have questions. Welcome to a great ride as you begin your SA application/s!!!

I just got a letter from the VP's office stating "This letter is to acknowledge receipt of your request to the Vice President for consideration of a Vice Presidential nomination to one of the US military academies. You are officially in the competition for a Vice Presidential nomination for the class entering the academies in the summer of 2009."

I am so excited...the whole process is actually starting...it feels like I have been waiting forever for this to begin!! (I am sure that it will feel like forever before it ends :shake:)

Good Luck everyone applying for class of 2013...Congratulations and good luck to all of those who applied for class of 2012:biggrin:!!!!!!!!

enjoy the ride, it is fun, scary and unexpected all wrapped up in one...remember rollercoasters are fun!

Vice Presidential Nomination?

Hi all,

I have a question about the VP nomination.

I have the actual application in front of me and am wondering....shouldnt I also write a personal letter of some sort?

Seems silly that I would just type and submit the application with no personal touch.

thanks!

You should follow their directions...realize that they will have thousands upon thousands submitting for a VP, (every branch multiplied by 9-10K)

Also a part of being an officer is to follow directions/orders.

The Vice President nominees are chosen by the Academy. Your "personal touch" is your application packet.

kmjg,
could you provide a URL link to the actual application form? i've googled it but found several versions of forms and form letters, so I don't know which one is the REAL application form for the VP nomination.

In order to be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must write personally to the Vice President during the application period of March 1 to October 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies.

^^ This is stated on the application form so you HAVE TO write a letter. Thats about the only personal touch that they allow... So don't forget to include a personal letter when sending your app in.

Good Luck!

Haha no worries! LOL I completely missed it too in the utter excitement of applying for a nomination. Thank goodness for parents :thumb:

do you think this refers to a letter separate from the application? because i note that the application itself is in the form of a letter to the VP.

Yes, I believe that the application is in the FORM of a letter but the when sent in a seperate letter is REQUIRED. This is my own interpretation so I'm not sure if it is 100% correct but I do believe so. The app also says that you must write "personally" so I'm assuming that personally means your own thoughts...

IMO, I would rather have an extra letter that they could simply toss away, rather than forget an important piece of the app.

I only sent in the application letter and I recieved a letter from them saying that I was an official candidate. The VP doesn't decide anyway, the sa does.

Hmmm... Ok, well I hope they didn't think too much of my letter. We'll see...

The reason they say you must write personally, is because for a Presidential the AD member must request it, the applicant cannot request a Presidential unless they are AD.

Don't read too much into writing personally. Molloy is right the SA grants the vp nom. Everyone applies for it. All you will receive is a letter saying we have put your name in and to foward any info to the SA
