Hi!

I'm a USAFA ALO (think Blue and Gold Officer). I have a young man that was just called this week and offered a slot at USNA Prep School.

He knows nothing about it...and neither do I really.

We are meeting this weekend to discuss his options (he didn't get into USAFA obviously but I've been working with him for several years so I will try to help all I can).

PM me...or post or hit me at: flieger83@cox.net

Anything you can tell me that I can counsel this young man with would be greatly appreciated!

A local BGO might be able to assist you in counsel.
Short answer though, is yes. It is virtually the same concept as AFA's prep school, located in Newport RI. Those who go and complete a satisfactory year academically and otherwise are virtually guaranteed an offer of appointment the ensuing year.

There are many varied opinions about these programs and their purpose(s), and while NAPS may not be the end-all to end all in prep school preparation, regardless of mine or others personal opinions of the experience itself, IF this young person wants to go to USNA, it is a GREAT OPTION. Even in today's withering, failing economy, the program has not been cut.

God works in strange ways, and this might well be one of those. In any case, this young man should thank God for this opportunity and calling, imo.

No doubt, it could well be a "course correction", putting the lad back on the "right" path!:thumb::rolleyes::wink::shake:

Does he not have an assigned BGO?

Hi Mongo!

Actually I asked him that and his answer was: "Sir, I did...but he was retiring and he's now moved out of state!"

I think the real issue here is: he lost his shot at USAFA and USNA was his backup hope (he really wants to fly for EITHER service...likes certain roles in the AF, is challenged by the idea of naval aviation) that unfortunately didn't happen. Then he recieved ROTC scholorships to both services...

And then at the last minute...this.

I know my opinion...but I wanted folks here with more "Navy know-how" than I to chime in!

From the USNA catalog, the Blue and Gold Area Coordinator for Arizona:
ARIZONA
Colonel Joseph Maquire
Phone: Home 480-634-1772
E-mail: jrmaguire@cox.net
Zip code areas 850-869

I could not imagine saying no to attending but there is a first for everything and I know nothing of the circumstances. Contact the Colonel and let him run with it.

Excellent source; thank you!

That's NOT the gent I've seen at "Service Academy Days" over the years so he must have retired!
