Hello everyone,

I have a question about Application status on USAFA admission site.
This afternoon, My DS saw the latest update below:

========================
Your Status: Applicant*
Attention! You have been identified for promotion to Candidate status.
Your "Candidate Kit" will be available to access (on this page) soon
(early August at the latest).
========================

USAFA admission on Facebook said:
The Class of 2016 currently has approximately 7,000 applicants!

By the way, information on profile of the class of 2014 was:
(1) Applicants: 11,627
(2) Candidate Pool: 7543
(3) Qualified Candidates: 2445
(4) Offers of Admission: 1566

Where is my DS in now? (1) or (2)? I don't think he is in (3) yet.
And the number of applicants on FaceBook is for (1)?
USAFA admission process is about 1.5 month slower than USMA..
Is this normal?

We learned a lot from here, so any comments are welcome!

Thanks,

I can answer a few of your questions here, but not all of them. Your DS will be considered (2) once his application opens, basically he is already considered that, but the application just takes awhile to open for everyone. And yes the number on Facebook is for (1). (3) is when you have a nomination and you have all the qualifications to be accepted for an appointment. This does not mean you will get an appointment, but it means you have met all the requirements. That is why the number drops so much from (2) to (3). A lot of people do not receive noms. Air Force's applications normally do come out a little later than the others, but this year seems to be a lot slower. This is my third year applying so I have noticed the time difference, but I believe it has something to do with money. Do not quote me on that though! Hope this helps!

Your DS has been identified by the Admissions board to move up to (2) as of August as he's met the preliminary academic, athletic and extracurricular requirements to be competitive for an appointment. As you can see, only roughly 60% complete the application and are deemed competitive by the board to make it to that next stage.

Note: You can still be considered to be a Candidate even if you don't meet the 'competitive' academic/athletic/extracurricular requirements of the AFA Admissions board if you receive a nomination from one of your nominating sources.

The numbers on Facebook does indeed correspond to (1).

FWIW, I don't think the status "qualified candidate" ever appears on the application. It will still say "candidate" after medical qualifications are met and a nomination received. Eventually, around 1100 will see the status change to "appointee."

Isn't a "qualified candidate" the same as 3Qed (medically qualified/academically qualified/physically qualified) with a nomination?

Also the appointee number that ChristCorp quoted recently is 1,050 which is down significantly from only a few years ago. However, the offers of admissions will be somewhat higher in the neighborhood of something like 1200.

CC is correct; the USAFA has briefed all of us that the number appointed this coming year will be in the 1,050 range. That can be adjusted up or down depending upon the attrition rate at the time (think next March) but it's pretty close. And the next couple of years...they're going to be similar. This will continue until the wing is down to the legal level its supposed to maintain at and the attrition rate is better understood.

Offers...expect them to be slower...they're going to want to give everyone the best shot they can...which means they'll want to see everything/everyone.

One of the reasons things are moving so slowly this year is that the Academy is changing their application system/program. I called last week to inquire and this was the answer I was given as to the delay. I have a 2014 cadet and was concerned at the lapse compared to when she applied. They are also slower on processing Presidential Nominations.
