Hello, I'm a former midshipman of the class of 2015 at the Naval Academy who just voluntarily separated during plebe summer due to personal and medical reasons. I'm currently on leave pending status, but what I was wondering if this is the end of the road for me in terms of getting a military career. I now know that the Academy lifestyle isn't one for me, but I really do want to become an officer in the military. I turned down an ROTC scholarship to go to the Naval Academy, but I'm wondering, is it even possible to do ROTC anymore?

sure it is possible. It may be too late to as far as getting an ROTC scholarship, but you can still do ROTC as a college programmer and still get commissioned. Contact the NROTC department at the school you will be attending.

Contact your school immediately. My DS was told by admissions and ROTC that if something did not work out to please call them immediately. It never hurts to ask. Good Luck!

If you're incredibly lucky, your scholarship is still available (probably not at this point, though). So join the college program and do your best to get any of the 3- or 2-year scholarships, I bet the folks that run the ROTC there would be happy to help you.

What school will you be attending for Fall 2011 ?

Call them on Monday. Do not delay. If you were already accepted there is a very good chance they will make room for you.
If you did not apply - see if you can get your guidance counselor involved and go to bat for you. Explain that you had a service academy appointment and it did not work out for you. Most colleges (even *good* ones) understand this and the fact you were appointed works in your favor.

A few years ago I knew someone who left West Point after 4 days. She had not applied anywhere else at all. She hussled and got into the University of Delaware - IRRC her guidance counselor got involved for you.
Two years ago - same thing - a young man left Coast guard on R-Day. He had also not applied anywhere else. They called Penn State and they made a space for him.

Good luck to you. Keep moving forward!

Thank you for all your help, I really appreciate it. Right now the only school that took me in is UCR, so I will be attending there for at least two years. I really wanted to go back to SB or LA, but they didn't even give me the opportunity to appeal as they are full. I have an appointment with a PMS at a local college for ROTC; he says he wants me to explain to him my situation, my scholarship, and to enroll in ROTC. I am really nervous and I don't know what to expect..
