I've heard recently on Fox News about food poisoning at BCT causing 160 cadets to be sick. Does anyone have any more info about this?

This happened at USCGA this past spring semester, it was mostly isolated to four different companies. I was one of the lucky ones who got it. Not much fun but it passed...hopefully everyone makes a full recovery soon!

Food poisoning or flu

First, I'm not a doctor and rarely sleep at a Holiday Inn. However, when a large group of people suddenly come down with nausea, diarrhea, and a fever, and the diagnosis is gastroenteritis (inflamation of the gastric lining) it is caused by a bacteria....i.e. food poisoning. A virus usually spreads a bit more slowly. (Unless of course it's a zombie movie and it spreads in a matter of seconds and have you noticed that zombie movies suddenly have really fast running zombies...what's up with that? But I digress.) The good news: It usually passes* very quickly. (No pun intended, nor visual image suggested.) The bad news: You feel terrible for 12 to 48 hours. My theory (again only based on what I've read so far, so don't take this as gospel) is that someone in food division has some 'splaining to do. (eg. Don't leave the mac salad in the sun for 3 hours.)

Your theory sounds good. I just feel bad for all those who got it. My sister's friend got it during BCT. He was sleeping and felt like he had to vomit, so he tried to get off his top bunk to the bottom bunk quickly to go to the restroom. On his way down he fell and broke his leg. They sent him back home.:frown:Sad story right? He got injured the first time and this was his 2nd try.

DS said he felt a little queasy and light-headed on Friday so stood down. They bussed him and a bunch of others to quarantine on Friday, where he finally was bored enough to write a letter home. He hasn't been seen in any of the Webguy photos the last 5 days.

I hope he feels better soon. DS's roomate is in quatantine as well (found out via FB). Haven't heard from DS but have seen him on WebGuy recently.

The only thing i find really interesting, is it says cadets and some "Active Duty" members. If the active duty members were ACO, wing staff NCO's, etc... I could understand food related. They may or may not eat at mitch's or arnold's. But if the active duty military are from the permanent party side of base, then there's no way that food would seem related. Not unless it was a delivery by a particular vendor source that delivered to BOTH chow halls. (cadet and permanent chow halls). The permanent party side of the base and the cadet area don't really hang out at the same places. That would mean that food related might not be so plausible.

Anyway; I also am not a doctor. But I "Played Doctor" a lot when I was younger. And I can SPELL "Holadea In Xpres". mike....

Plus it sounds like (from my son's letter home) that basics got sick at Jacks. So unless all the affected active duty were down there, maybe a virus.

Now we're hearing it's likely Norovirus. Our daughter had it a couple of years ago when she was away at college in San Diego. Also common to vacation spots (like cruise ships). Luckily, it typically lasts 24-72 hours. Very contagious. Can be foodborne, and frequently associated with consumption of cold foods (e.g. salads, sandwiches, dressings). Not fun! Hopefully they'll have it contained before the rest of the wing returns this weekend (sending DS back with a little extra hand sanitizer....).

Jacks Valley = Cruise Ship?!

I'm there!!

A few years ago, the N. Virus went through our school district, K-12 all in the same building. They had to shut down the entire district for almost 3 weeks, have professionals come and de-contaminate the entire school (twice)... cost us a bundle as a district.

Gotta feel bad for the kids though... As bad as a couple years ago when H1N1 went through.

Yeah, Norovirus is the most likely culprit at this point. I spent all afternoon putting up signs with instructions on how to prevent its spread and there have been multiple details scrubbing some of the rooms that used to be quarantine. We also made kits with gloves and a mask for each CQ in case someone does get sick

My daughter wrote me a letter and said she got sick at Jacks Valley, she was told it was from the water from one of the "water buffalo's" and she was bused with about 200 other cadets back to the Academy and was in quarantine for a few days but it looks like she is back in action now.

I think there are only a few kids left here in quarantine. They're still crazy about dissinfecting everything still though!
