Weight Of Personal Statement

How much weight does the personal statemnet actually carry

I do not think the weighting on specific things like this has ever been made public.

About the closest I've ever heard in this regard is when somebody once asked, "What advantage is it having a parent as an alum?" The answer they got (from a BGO) was "... about the same as a well written essay."

And I have no idea what that means. :)

I think it's more important to not write a horrible personal statement than it is to have an outstanding one. I've helped several candidates over the years and I have read some absolutely horrible ones. Lots of editing!

Of course, a particularly well-written essay can certainly help. How much? I don't know.

Absolute guess:

The theme for USNA is "Why you want to go to a Service Academy and serve as an Officer in the Navy" or something to the like, right?

Well... Parent in the Military = knowledge of Military life = good essay?

Unless they've changed it recently, I believe the personal statement question is:

How does attending the Naval Academy help you obtain your goals and what event in your life has helped shape your character?

It's really two questions.

A friend of mine told me the statements of USMA and USNA are basically the same (except that Army becomes Navy).

Describe what led to your initial interest in the naval service and how the Naval Academy will help you achieve your long range goals

Explain why you want to attend
the United States Military Academy and serve on active duty as an Army officer

The top one is USNA and the bottom one is USMA.

In my opinion, if you write an essay based off the USNA one, it will basically answer everything for your USMA one..
