Settling in to the new normal. After a year plus of dotting i's and crossing t's, researching and thinking about to-do lists and finally crossing tasks off of said list, now what? We have Parents Weekend to to look forward to. Yay! The excitement of preparing for Indoc was intense. What an emotional time it has been. Stalking for photos from Indoc all day long become a compulsion. Finally those precious few minutes phone calls. And now emails, checking, checking. Last Sunday I got to talk to DS for 30 minutes, his GF must have been unavailable, lol. The new normal is here. I no longer can be part of every step along the way. At least not in the way of the last year. This is great news yet it is a transition to remember how to fill my day without it revolving around getting kiddo to KP.
Last night I started re-reading the SAF posts from last year at this time. What were the parents going through then? How does my experience differ? What stumbling blocks may be on the horizon that we can avoid by being knowledgeable? Many of the class of 2015 parents are on a Facebook page and sharing but I miss the deeper pool of council and experience. Have the old timers on this forum wondered where the heck the newbie parents are? Why aren't we here needing our hands held? Lol. Or does this happen every year. Sorry to spoil the fun of being able to look back and say "whew, I remember that".

Lucky me...I get to help my daughter (rising senior) go through the whole process again. Yippee hurray! :bang:

My DS earnestly asked me what I was going to do with all of the extra time now that this adventure has ended. I said "First as you Chief of Staff who has been with you through the application process of five academies, two ROTC programs and the seven colleges that went along with them, I resign". Second, "I have much healing to do".

Partial retirement?

Its more of a partial retirement. It isn't as crazy but there are still moments to remind you. For me it was the announcement at 7pm on Monday that DS needed to be at his next ship Tuesday afternoon. Not difficult, just a quick "drop everything moment" and one 5:30am drive to the airport later, accomplished. Not exactly the normal college lifestyle to be sure! I advise a quick healing and enjoy the ride!

Actually, this is the first year that the parents have moved to Facebook for answers instead of here. New trend, I guess.

I hope there is a return of the new parents to the forum. Newbies coming on board the next few years won't know where to look for answers to questions b/c there will be old and "new old" timers.

Not to mention the joy of getting used to one "current" facebook look and feel only to have them decide to "make things "betterer" and screw up how you and the group use it by changing the whole look and feel like they did to us just when we were getting things really going with our "Kings Point Club of DC" and our "USMMA Class of 1982" Facebook Groups about a year and half ago. But just like this forum and USMMA - "the price is right" and it's still alot better than newsletters, snail mail lists and phone trees, etc. before we all got the capabilities that the internet and social media provide.

One thing the SAF has that FB doesn't is organization. With information listed somewhat ( oh shut you laughing people in the back) by categories. I have many times wanted to see how various topics had progressed but with the Facebook format it is difficult. Besides I like the anonymity ( again you laughers, sshhh) of the forum and you can't see pictures of my dog ( that is private)
All is well.

In a way (okay, every way), I am glad that I went through the Academy before all of this connectivity and readily available information. There is something to be said for 3,000 miles (and more during sea year) of buffer. . .

Oh really Cmakin. Do you care to expand on that a little bit? :shake: Sounds like there are some stories there.

I see several FB pages related to KP/USMMA......which one is being used the most? (perhaps the "one" referenced here?)

thanks

I agree with Lynnpar, I like the threads better and I like being able to search through old threads and find nuggets of information buried within them.

The facebook group is "Parents & Family of USMMA Class of 2015"

It's probably related to why DD chose to ignore my friend request on FB. :yllol:

Oh, I don't even try to do that with my college age (non KP) kids. Frankly, I don't want THEM to know what I am up to, either.
