JROTC Nomination

I need some help with this one. I don’t want to get this one wrong and give bad information.… there’s another thread on the AFA section (see this link) that the OP was asking about JROTC and the nomination portion came up and I made a statement to correct someone and they corrected me so now I’m confused. I didn’t want to highjack the thread so I created a new one in the nomination section. Basically it’s around needing Distinguished Unit to get a nomination for that branch. I looked for the code and this is what I’ve found.

Title 32 - National Defense > CHAPTER VII--DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE > PART 901--APPOINTMENT TO THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY > § 901.12 Honor military and honor Naval schools—AFROTC and AFJROTC category.
(2) Five students from each high school AFJROTC detachment may be nominated to compete for the vacancies allocated to this category.
(i) Students must apply for nomination to the Aerospace Science Instructor, who must certify that the applicants meet the basic eligibility requirements and have or will have successfully completed the prescribed AFJROTC program by the end of the school year.
(ii) The Aerospace Science Instructor uses the nomination forms provided by the Academy to recommend for nomination the five best-qualified applicants to the principal of the high school in which the AFJROTC detachment is established.
(iii) Nominations from the principal of the high school are submitted directly to the Academy by January 31 of the entry year.

It doesn’t mention anything about having to have Distinguished Unit to be eligible to this category. For example the way I understand this is that if you’re in AF JROTC you can nominated in this category for the AFA. I’ve read on the forum that you need Distinguished Unit to apply to a different branch than your JROTC for example AF JROTC applying to the USMA will need Distinguished Unit. Is this correct? Or do you need Distinguished Unit to get the same branch nomination and you need Distinguished Unit with Merit/Honor to get a different branch nomination? Like I said in the beginning I don’t want to give bad info so if someone can set me straight and show me where it’s written up I would greatly appreciate it.

Actually the title says this: " § 901.12 Honor military and honor Naval schools—AFROTC and AFJROTC category."

Aside from this, I would advise that you go speak to the JrROTC officer/commander and ask the very question.

I don't know how any of them work other than AF JrROTC and I was briefed on that procedure by one of the "SASI's" at a school I work with. He's the "officer/commander" that I mentioned.

Any of the JrROTC military members can answer this question but the short version is YES this is another nomination category available provided the unit is an "honor" unit.

Facts:

Your unit must be a Distinguished Unit for your Senior Aerospace Science Instructor to have nominating power to nominate cadets to the AIR FORCE Academy.

Your unit must be a Distinguished Unit with MERIT for your Senior Aerospace Science Instructor to have nominating power to nominate cadets to the OTHER Service Academies.

A few things to know:

1. If your Senior Aerospace Science Instructor hates you, you probably won't receive this nomination. He has ultimate authority in who he nominates.

2. A unit can be declared a Distinguished Unit every year. It's not automatic. How it works: your unit comes up with five goals at the beginning of the year. The unit assesses itself close to the end of the year. If it has met its goals, it annotates this in the assessment. If it has not, it annotates its failure to do so. The Senior Aerospace Science Instructor chooses to write a recommendation for the unit or not. This recommendation is for the Distinguished Unit award. It is 100% possible for the unit to meet all its goals and the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor still not recommend the unit for the Distinguished Unit award. This has happened to me. The assessment and recommendation form are electronically sent to Headquarters AFJROTC at Maxwell Air Force Base. They evaluate every unit, and come up with a list of Distinguished Units. Usually the proportion is between one-fourth and one-third receiving it. The others do not. If a unit is declared a Distinguished Unit, the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor is given nominating power for ONE YEAR, and he can ONLY nominate to the AIR FORCE Academy.

3. Every THREE years, each unit is inspected by the Regional Supervisor, who is always a colonel. This is an external inspection under the direct authority of Headquarters AFJROTC. It is impartial. The colonel inspects a LOT of stuff. It's pretty intense. There are three levels of results from this inspection: not satisfactory, satisfactory, and exceeds standards. IF a unit receives an "exceeds standards" rating, AND it meets all the basic requirements for the Distinguished Unit award as outlined in number 2 above, the unit is considered for the Distinguished Unit with Merit Award. Basically this means that this award can ONLY be attained every THREE years. If a unit is declared a Distinguished Unit with Merit, the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor is given nominating power for ONE YEAR, and he can nominate to ANY Service Academy.

4. If I remember correctly, a unit can NOT be a Distinguished Unit for the first few years, as per AFJROTC Headquarters policy. However, it would be wise to check this against the ultimate authority of the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor.

5. Don't be surprised if the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor scratches his head when you ask him about nominations. It isn't a widely-done thing, especially with some of the more, shall we say, "lax" units, which is what most of them are, in my experience.

Going to take that advice Flieger and talk to some of the SASIs I know to see if they know where it’s written.

SC I have a strong feeling that what you wrote may very well be fact but I need to know where you got your information from. Call me an old school cynic but I like to read for myself from official doc or sources where it’s written. Nothing against you please don’t take it that way I just would love to know where you got your information from. Remember just because someone posted it doesn’t make it true.
