One problem I'm worrying about is Swimming. What if you don't know how to Swim, what happens?

Does the Coast Guard Academy teach you or your automatically scratched off the list to be a candidate for the academy?

Thank you to anyone that can answer .:thumb:

It's not a requirement for appointment.

They will teach you.

As an officer, you won't get much time in the water anyway, unless the cutter is sinking or swim call is declared.

Do yourself a favor....learn. It is a skill no one should be without. You will have to take remedial swimming at CGA if you do not pass the swim test. Not the end of the world, but if you start now you should have plenty of time to learn. Call your local YMCA. Lots of "older" folks take these sorts of classes. Good luck. :thumb:

My son did just that prior to entering the Academy. His swimming was so-so. He went to the Y in the months leading up to R-day and was able to pass the proficiency test. But even then you take lesson as a swimming lifesaver along the way. You become Red Cross certified.

I suggest doing the YMCA or better yet join your school's swim team. When I was interested in the academy at the beginning of my junior year I didn't know how to swim. Sure, I could get in a pool and splash around, but I didn't know how to swim. So I decided to join my school's swim team. It certainly wasn't easy, but I got through the season. I've never felt so tired in my life. It was harder than even Swab Summer, but I made it through. And I ended up being one of the faster swimmers in my company during swab summer. :thumb:
