Hello everyone!

Well school is just around the corner sadly and Senior year is about to begin. I really hope that senioritis doesnt hit me until 2nd semester

So I am in the current stage of finalizing everything for USNA, USMA and AROTC.
I have a few questions:
For USNA and USMA-
1) Do I simply ask my school to send my transcripts to USMA and USNA? Do I need to provide them with any address/fax/ etc?
2) How can I update my Candidate Activities Record (CAR)?
3) When is the last opportunity I can take the SAT/ACT? Can I constantly retake the test until April, hypothetically?
4) If I am retaking the CFA by my JROTC instructor, do I simply give the score paper to my counselor to send? How will those be sent out?

I read about the lowered admissions rate for USMA c/o 2016. Will this affect USMAPS as well?

Thank you very much for being very patient with me
Dave

1) Do you have those gray envelopes? You can put transcripts in those and send them out. They are pre-addressed. I have no idea about USNA.
2) I was told by Admissions to send an e-mail with any updates. I think that your contact for the CAR may have to re-verify the info, but I am not entirely sure.
3) I would think you can technically retake the SATs until April, but the earlier the better. If you can get better scores now then you would be more competitive earlier.
4) I have yet to take the CFA, but I think the instructor gets an e-mail on how to send the scores.

I cant speak much about USNA, although I'm applying there too, my focus is on USMA at the moment

1) If you look on your portal you should see something that says something along the lines of "# of semester transcripts received." along with a little red X next to it. Before you can send out you transcripts you must first fill in the contact information for you schools transcript official, who may or may not be your counselor. Just simply ask for your FULL and current transcript from your school official. The transcript should also state your class rank and cumulative GPA. One thing to make sure of: the transcript needs to be "official" which means your counselor must sign the transcript and put in a sealed envelope. On the cover, make sure to put your Candidate Number, name, etc. just pop into one of those gray pre-addressed envelopes and wait for them to receive it!

2) To update the CAR you go to the top of the page in your portal and click on "Contact Us" type whatever you want and it should update.

3) Last SAT and ACT dates are before April, but remember, it doesn't mean slack off now and then hope to do good in April because sometime around the November time frame you will be competing for a nomination with the scores you already have. No nomination = No appointment. So, I'd say study for them now and take the next SAT and ACT ASAP. (Which is very soon I might add!)

4) First off, (as far as I know) you CAN NOT retake the CFA. you're stuck with your first score. But if you are an exception, the way to send them out is either by mail or online. At the bottom of the portal there are a bunch of PDFs and one is about the CFA. Print it out and give it to your JROTC Instructor. The last page he/she fills out and signs. then just mail it off. To do it online, follow the process in question 1. Enter the person's email, and they'll receive the online chart to fill in.

And for USMAPS, I believe I read somewhere that they will be accepting something like 235 to 265 Cadet Candidates this year, so about normal. USMAPS is no longer in NJ; its on campus!

... Oh yeah, patience is a virtue. haha. We are all in this together! :thumb:

Sweet. Thanks so much for the information!
Do you know why we cannot take the CFA's right now?

For USMA-
1) Do I simply ask my school to send my transcripts to USMA and USNA? Do I need to provide them with any address/fax/ etc?
On the SSK - fill out the contact info of the school official that sends transcripts in the Request For Academic Information section.

2) How can I update my Candidate Activities Record (CAR)?
Use the Contact Us link on your portal

3) When is the last opportunity I can take the SAT/ACT? Can I constantly retake the test until April, hypothetically?
You can continue to submit test scores (or any other updated info) until the application deadline - which is the last day of Feb.

4) If I am retaking the CFA by my JROTC instructor, do I simply give the score paper to my counselor to send? How will those be sent out?
On the SSK - fill out the contact info on who will do the administration of the CFA. An email will be sent to that person. The email gives instructions and the form that is to be filled out when the CFA is given.

No

Sorry - I misread. I thought you were taking the CFA for the first time.
Explain the situation a little bit more.
Did you go to SLS and take it there?
Have you taken it and not turned in the scores?
Have you taken it (outside of SLS) and turned in scores?

I took the CFA at SLS with above average scores. however, my friend is applying to USNA and has to take the CFA from our JROTC instructor next month. I thought I would just take the opportunity to retake the test with him..
my CFA scores were submitted into USMA and USNA.

If they were already submitted, and there is a green check mark on your portal for the CFA, then I don't think you can take it again. Call admissions tomorrow to find out for sure.

Interesting...I was told that I can continue to submit new CFA scores but cannot "superscore" like the SAT/ACT.

It may be RC specific. I've heard some folks say that their RC will allow candidates to submit more than one CFA.
I would check with your RC. Tell him that you passed at SLS and would like to take again to see if you can improve your scores.

There might be one exception to allow someone to take it again, and that may be if you rejected your scores at SLS to take it on a later date.

One other thing: I've read this warning in a few places already that if you become injured during the fall sports season and it causes you to perform subpar on the CFA then you're out of luck. You have to take the results. No do-overs.

But to be sure, in case you have some exception, call admissions tomorrow.

I understood that once we had passed the CFA and received a NO RISK there was no need in retaking the CFA.

CFA - USMA SLS Green Pass Status?

If you have taken the CFA test @ USMA SLS and recieved scores that resulted in a "NO RISK" status, which when submitted generated a Green Light status in the portal,my question is this.

Do these same score results from this USMA CFA,when transferred to USNA result in the same pass status as well?

Is it accurate to assume the evaluation of scores is the same between these 2 academies when it comes to CFA pass status?

We are planning on taking another one to see if we can improve, but want to know if we have the same exact transferable status with both academies before a final test.

I appreciate everyone's feedback on these questions.

DWatson,
I heard the complete opposite at SLS. They just stated that if I retake the exam, I cannot use the old score- whether the score improved or not.

I just want to retake the test because I felt that I had an unfair advantage of being jetlagged and running the mile on a course which was slightly longer and had bit of a slope to it.. I could go on about my reasons as to why I want to retake the exam, but my point is that I feel that I could perform much better now than I did back in May.

You may want to investigate the benefits/drawbacks of retaking a CFA that you have already passed.

My understanding is that CFA/athletic/physical is 10% of your admissions consideration. Now, for purposes of easy back-of-the-envelope calculations, let's assume CFA dominates this and so is respobsible for the full 10%, and now assume you "move the needle" on your CFA scores by +10%. You end up adding maybe 1% more to your 100% total admissions score. And this assumes you do better. Think what would happen if you score worse than you did at SLS by a similar or even higher percent.

Just my two (uninformed and even potentially wrong-headed, but I said it anyway) cents.

I feel that I could perform much better now than I did back in May.

You need to know you will do better. Practice CFA's are your friend.

When you have done enough that you can articulate where & how you expect to be able to improve, then you can have a dialog with your RC or MALO.

Regarding whether it really helps improve your score, "it's just pass / fail", etc, you really need to talk with your MALO or RC.

My input as a parent of a 2015 New Cadet, fight for every point, never assume "good enough". It's getting tougher each year, and that few points you improve may make the difference. And the subjective impact of having someone fighting to improve their file cannot be underestimated.

And remember your MOC may use CFA results as part of their scoring. (one of our's did).

Thank you all for the helpful responses. I will talk to my FFR and B&G officer about this before I decide to retake the exam :)

Just a side question: can you use your super-scored SAT results when you send them in for your nomination?

Just a side question: can you use your super-scored SAT results when you send them in for your nomination?

MOC's apparently vary on this. When DS was applying, his MOC's had you send your SAT scores directly to them via SAT code. And I think all but one superscored for you. (But you also had to fill it out on the app, the official scores were just to verify).

For completeness he also included copies of his SAT score in his package. Which help, as one MOC misplaced his initially. (another did the same on a transcript, if I recall)

The reality is that there is much more variation in the MOC nom process, and you need to be researching that now. Even though they may not accept apps yet, you need to be lining up letters of recommendation, etc. Most Nom apps in our area don't change much from year to year and are available on the web. If not, a simple call or visit at an academy day will net you a copy of the application.

Remember the nom competition can be as fierce as that of the academy itself, or more. Several hundred applicants competing for a very small number of slate slots for some Senators. With stats well above USMA "averages" in some states. So you really need to get ahead of the process!

You are asking the right questions! :thumb:
