NROTC questions... college program to scholarship?

Hi there,

Unfortunately I was not selected a 4 Year NROTC Marine Option Scholarship (3.4 GPA, AP, Varsity, and a 275ish PFT score). This semester I am attending a local JC. I would like to possibly transfer to a school that has NROTC unit, most likely Oregon State University, and join it through the college program. How hard is it to receive a scholarship through this path? Is there a 3 year scholarship that I can apply for somewhere?

Scholarships are getting more competitive, and like you many who did not receive one will reapply for one once in college. I state this so you don't assume that the chances increase. Yes, the pool is smaller since it is only college, but so is the pot of money in that pool.

The negative I see for you is that there will be mids at OSU who also got the TWE, but are attending OSU. This gives them an edge since they will be in ROTC as a freshman, whereas, you will not.

Additionally, nobody knows how the DOD will be approaching the issue that they are to cut 10% of their budget starting this Oct.1. They can decide to shrink that pot of gold even further.

The last issue that causes a reason why anyone should not chance how hard it will be to get a 3 yr., is the fact that nobody here knows their manpower needs for 2015 commissions.

I.E. last fall everybody would have said for the AFA that they offer 1700 apptmts with the expectation of 1350 arriving on I Day. Feb. rolled around and the AFA announced only 1350 apptmts would be given out with the expectation of 1150 for I Day.

Now what does that mean to you regarding scholarships? It means that up to 350 more were going to go plan B (ROTC scholarship) and now ROTC has too many in the pool, so they may not do a 3 yr IS scholarship for 15. Actually, AFROTC stopped IS back 2 yrs ago because of this exact reason. On top of that they started revoking scholarships based on grades.

ROTC is plan B for the military, and if Plan A is meeting their personnel needs, they will adjust plan B. It all rolls down from the top.

I wish I could tell you it is easy peasy to get an IS, but in these economic times that would be a blatant lie. The only thing I can say is that you have 0% chance of getting one if you don't apply.

NROTC question

Didn't want to start a new thread over this when someone may have a simple answer, or confirmation of my suspicion. DS is college programmer at VMI in a few days anyway. He has to hand in financial account info to NROTC when he matriculates. Was advised in a recent e mail that he would be receiving money in February as long as he passed the PFT. I am guessing that would be a uniform allowance or something along that line? I am just curious.

I would ask that on the VMI/Citadel forums. My guess would be either book stipend or monthly allowance, because for traditional ROTC, uniforms are included and you do not pay for them until graduation. (Mess Dress is the only exception)
