Let's see if we can get the board a little spun up. Contacted Brigade today to see if they had the dates for the AROTC boards for this year. Here they are:

17 Oct 11
9 Jan 12
5 Mar 12

Going to guess that 10 Jan is still the deadline to apply, and you will have till Feb to complete the packets.

Things to think about:
SAT test dates of 1 Oct, 5 Nov, and 3 Dec give you one shots to improve your SAT Score before the first board and three shots to improve before the second board. ACT dates are 10 Sep, 22 Oct, and 10 Dec.

Remember you need to send transcripts and test scores, conduct an interview, and take a PFT. Do some backward planning and you should be able to get before the first or second board.

I'll do a little more analysis on my blog later this week.

Hope this helps.

Is mid September an early enough interview date to be reviewed by the first board?

Just my 2 cents...but haven't we all seen board dates published/released and then, wow:eek: they changed them......hope 2016 gets a more predictable year

Take care.

A month lead time has worked in the past. But don't count on it. Get it done as soon as possible. As I remember correctly, the stats diminished as the year wore on last year because we had a series of fiscal unncertainty and disruptions caused by Congress. The upcoming year will NOT be better. Congress has set a deadline for the "Super Committee" to make budget recommendations under the following deadlines:

Sept.16: Super Committee must have first meeting
Oct. 14: Legislative committees and president make recommendations to Super Committee
Nov. 23: Super Committee must vote on plan--if approved, it goes to Congress
Dec. 23: Super Committee plan must pass both chambers to avoid trigger

What this means is that the October 17 AROTC board will have a clue about where the main cuts are coming from (defense/entitlements). But if there is no agreement by December 23, the hammer will fall (the budget cuts to both defense and entitlements in the form of a "trigger"), and the January board will look much bleaker than the October board.

That said, this year will likely be tougher than the last regardless. The only thing you can do is make your packet as strong as possible as soon as possible (i.e., don't unduly delay your application in the hope of obtaining higher SAT scores months after the October board).

Hi, Ohio! Sadly, I don't think 2011-2011 will be smooth-sailing (see my post above). Grrrrrrrrr!!!!

Mid September should be fine. I don't have the "paperwork due by" dates yet. I got these three dates in an email from our brigade, with no other information. Personally, I think this year will go a little smoother, and I think there will be a little more certainty. Last years "issues" were in part due to a new CG, the turmoil in moving from Monroe to Knox, and the fiscal uncertainty.

I'm optimistic, but I'm not going to bet the house. Things are going well here at Clarkson, so I'll keep doing what I'm doing, and continue to point the rest of you in the right direction. The rest is up to you, Cadet Command, and you future Battalion.

I think it also will go more smoothly.

People fear that it won't due to the DOD budget issue. However, they have all known now that this will be an issue for FY 11/12 for many months. I believe in the military, and I am willing to bet my house, that HQ has discussed this already on how they will broach this issue if they get a big cut in scholarship money.

My guess for every ROTC branch, you will see few come out on the 1st board, and the bulk will come out on the last boards.

The other scenario I could see happening is them manipulating the lists to only give the scholarship to the least expensive on the list for the main stream, and most expensive for the upper tier scoring candidates.

Look at NROTC, this was seen on many threads LY. Candidates getting admitted to their number 1 school, but no scholarship, yet getting a scholarship to a less costly school.

Finally, remember the economy plays into the efficiency of ROTC scholarships. With it in the tanks, the pool of candidates will increase. However, the way a board works is they meet for X amount of days. If the pool is so large, it will take longer to weed through and give results.

I agree with you. I am certain that HQ has mapped out a detailed contingency plan for precisely what happens if Congress fails to pass legislation by the trigger date and deep defense cuts are automatically implemented.

The point here is that candidates should not make any plans on what will or will not happen in Congress in the coming year. Get your applications in before the first board! Last year, when we started this process, the conventional wisdom based on prior boards from previous years was that the October board was usually the board with the smallest number of awards and that the bulk were released later. This proved not to be the case as I recall, however, when the numbers ultimately came out for the January and April boards. If I am incorrect about my recollection, please set me straight (my memory is admittedly not as acute as it once was).

ClarksonArmy,
Sir, thank you very much for posting the ROTC dates. I also have a few other questions regarding timing and notification of status below:

How long after the board meets do candidates typically hear from AROTC on their scholarship status?

How is a candidate notified? (Is it a letter via U.S. Mail, email or posted on the AROTC Status web site?)

Very respectfully,

You will receive an offer letter in the mail. You will also probably receive some calls from some ROOs if you get an offer. Can't really say how long after the board because it varies, and depends on a lot of factors. We are told when we can release the results, but some ROOs jump the gun. We can usually see results before the official release. There will also be other indicators, and if you read through this forum you will see all types of "old wives tales" about DODMERB status and other things that should tell you whether you have an offer or not. Don't rely on DODMERB status. I know you probably want to be able to make informed decisions regarding your college application that will be impacted by your scholarship status. When and how you will be notified is something you can't control. What you can control is ensuring all your information is accurate and submitted in a timely manner and posted to your file. Due dates are what you should be worrying about. I let my applicants (the ones that have one of my schools listed) know if they will be boarded, what they are missing, and what to do if they don't get an offer from each board. Hopefully you can find a ROO who will work with you in the same manner. A ROO who has been doing this job for a couple years, and is tied into the college application process can help you immeasurably in deciding things like early decision.

A little more detail to the timeline here. Note that the October SAT date probably doesn't give you enough time to get those scores in for the first board. You'll see what my opinion is, but take it with a grain of salt.

My son should be able to complete his application for the first board. However, he is taking the sats a second time Oct. 1 Assuming he completes his application with his first scores (math 640 verbal 650 writing 640), will he be able to update it with his Oct scores?
