Sorry if this question has come up in the past- I didn't take a thorough look around the forums.
When do you start contacting people for nominations? I know of a rising Junior who has already contacted representatives- is that too early?
And as a side note, when do you contact your ALO?

My DS (a rising junior) asked me to drop by our Rep's office a couple of weeks ago to set up an appointment to meet the Rep. Instead, the head of the local office met with us for about an hour. We talked for a while and he suggested that DS come and meet with the Rep in the spring. He did mention several times that it was good that DS was looking into the details now. He is the person that receives all of the nomination applications. It was worth the trip in to get the advice on when to proceed further with their office.

For most MOCs, they do not sit on the board that hands out the noms. They just endorse the boards selections. Boards are filled with different people from the community. You should also research how competitive your area is. NY is very competitive from a nom perspective. Typically they will not offer more than 1 nom because they want to spread the wealth.

Right now as a rising jr. what you need to do is make sure you are the most competitive candidate you can be, that means great SAT/ACT, great grades and great ECs.

As far as contacting your ALO. I would wait until the spring. Right now they are up to their eye balls in interviewing SA candidates, and getting those kids into the AFA.

The ALO will be assigned to you by the AFA after they deem you a candidate, which means you need to fill out the PCQ which opens in March. ALO lists come out in July.

Also, remember to apply for SLS, I believe that is in Dec/Jan.

Thank you! This was very helpful!
