On my USAFA application, my nom status says "received." Am I correct in assuming that this means the Presidential?

Well, did you apply for one?

Or you could perhaps ask your Admissions Officer (or whatever they are called in USAFA) what's up!

In a few days they will list the source on your file, but if your folks submitted for the Presidential, than it is the Presidential.

Presidential has to be submitted by the parent since they must submit paperwork to prove that the child qualifies for this nom.

Not exactly. I just had to put name, rank, service #, regular/reserve component, and branch. Then attach a copy of retirement orders which I got from my parents.

And yes, I did apply for it, or I wouldn't be asking. :thumb: If no further info shows up on the app within a few days, I'll call my admissions counselor.

Flyboy,

You are splitting hairs here. My point is that nom can only come through your parents. Yes, you can fill out the info., but it is not based on you, it is based on their status.

If you applied and your parents status makes you eligible it is a Presidential. There is no academic requirements, or interviews, or anything else, including the size of the slate. It is a guaranteed nom because your parent earned it as a bennie for serving in the military.

LY I believe for the AFA they had over 500, maybe it was even close to 600 Presidential noms. However, only 100 will be charged to this source.

I am not sure why you are confused about this because it is highly unlikely that your MOC boards have met, and probably too early to get a ROTC nom (if you applied) since schools aren't back in, thus all that is left for you is Presidential.

The VP is the other, but even with that it really doesn't matter. What matters is you have a nom, and you can now meet a board. Keep going for all of the other sources, because each time you do you will compete on another slate.

To summarize . . . Pres noms are NON-competitive. If you're eligible for one, you get one. It may be enough . . . it may not. You won't get a letter, etc. It should show up on your system, eventually, and on the BGO system. Could take a bit of time for this to happen.

Be sure to apply for MOC and VP noms, and any others for which you're eligible. Two reasons: (1) a Pres nom may not e enough and, (2) your BGO will likely ask and it doesn't go over well if you're "resting on your laurels" and not doing the work for an MOC nom.

Meet with a board. You mean the MOC boards usually done in the Fall, correct?

No Flyboy. The board that Pima is referring to is the Admissions Board at the Academy. Once your application is complete including a nomination, then it goes before the board which I thinks meets once a week starting in the Fall to evaluate candidates package for admissions. MOC boards typically meet in October, November or December.

Blackbird is correct, since you have a nom in hand you are now in queue for the admissions board which will meet weekly starting in Oct. Yrs. passed they would meet on Monday, apptmts sent out on Wed. Snoopy mailbox lurking begins on Thursday and ends with Sat. mail. OBTW, Admissions boards do not meet when school is not in session, so basically when the cadets leave for winter break, there will be no BFE's in your driveway.

Some ALO's will inform you if they are in close contact with the AFA regional when you are going up for the board.

It is rare that even with this one nom to get an appointment right off the bat, because in this scenario, they will have so many noms., that unless you are def. in, they may hold off to the end. They may wait to get your 7th semester grades, and see if you have other noms.

That is why the mass mailing is done in Mar. They want to wait for many to see where to slide each and every appointment in that has multiple noms. Reason why is to make the best class possible. By giving an apptmt in Oct., with only a Presidential, they may find themselves locked into charging it to Presidential, by waiting until the MOC's slates are up, it gives them more freedom regarding who to charge.

That is also why you keep going for other MOCs. Remember only about 10-15% of cadets will get apptmts prior to the mass mailing, many will be LOA's, principals, or candidates that have such a high WCS they know that they will win the apptmt if not on that slate (Pres), but def. from the national pool.

It is called a MASS MAILING for a reason. It is good you are this far along, but keep adding to that resume, keep applying for more noms until the board closes in Feb.. As I said not every Presidential nom will get apptd. so don't assume that it is now over and all you have to do is wait for the BFE. @400+ every yr never get in on the Presidential nom, they may get in, but their apptmt was from a different source.

Blackbird is correct, since you have a nom in hand you are now in queue for the admissions board which will meet weekly starting in Oct.
Does AFA require a nomination in order for the file go go before the board? USNA does not and,if I am not mistaken, neither does WP.

Yes, they are boarded prior, that is how LOA's occur starting early fall (Sept), which means their recs have already been reviewed 1X. However, in the posters case since he has a nom in hand, he is able to be appointed without an LOA when the 1st board that hands out appts. occurs and that usually around mid-Oct. I believe CC's DS did not have an LOA, but b/c he had a Presidential, his DS was in the very 1st board and found out in Nov., that he was APPOINTED even without any MOCs.

If memory serves me correctly, I think the earliest I have ever seen an appointment is @Nov.1. The first batches that are starting to be full fledge is usually between T-Day and Xmas. Obviously because MOCs slates are arriving and they now can start charging.

For candidates, one thing to realize is that many posters will just place their state when the lists starts. Don't fret because you don't know if it is the same slate that you submitted. You both may be on the Sens., but they maybe charged to the Cong, that you don't have or a Presidential.

No, they do not. Son went before the board in October and had LOA in hand before the MOCs even interviewed for nominations. He had no Presidential so that woudn't even have been a factor.

I see what you mean by meet with the board. Not physically, but your file goes before the board. Thanks.

Appointed without an LOA? So they basically determine that they want you but don't tell you that?

NOPE!

LOA's can go out as early as Sept. Look at Stealth's DS he had an LOA before the 1st board which was held in early Oct.

These are typically candidates, that they know are at the top of the top, and will get in.

Now realize, an LOA does not equate into graduating from the SA as the top 10%, because once there that LOA means squat. It is a new slate.

You re-edited, while I was posting, so now I am confused.

Appointed without an LOA? YES

You have a nom. in hand, so if the LOA comes down you will get apptd. as soon as you meet the board. No LOA, and you may have to bide time for them to determine if your WCS is high enough to guarantee you are in the top 100 Presidential noms. Hence, why you keep applying for more noms.

Not sure what you mean: THEY WANT YOU, BUT DON'T TELL YOU THAT. Are you asking that they may not tell you if you already met a board when you have a nom in hand? The answer is yes. If THEY WANT YOU BAD ENOUGH, you will get an LOA.

Welcome to the college application process...no school out there unless you are something amazing is going to guarantee you anything!

This is the part that had me confused.

You said appointed without an LOA. You mean that having a nom, I can now get an LOA if deemed deserving by the board. CC's DS found out in Nov that he was appointed. By that do you mean that he then got an LOA in Nov? Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

You said appointed without an LOA. You mean that having a nom, I can now get an LOA if deemed deserving by the board.

No, you would get an appointment. There is no need to give you a Letter Of Assurance unless your application is incomplete and you need to satisfy some other contingency, like the CFA.

Why would you want an LOA when the goal is an appointment? A LOA is nothing but a conditional appointment, not a full appointment. It doesn't become a full appointment until "the condition" is satisfied. Usually, "the condition" is a nomination. So a qualified candidate with a nomination would not receive a LOA, they would receive an appointment if selected.

CC's DS found out in Nov that he was appointed. By that do you mean that he then got an LOA in Nov? Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

No, he received an appointment in November. Not a Letter of Assurance. There was no need to offer a LOA (a conditional appointment) since his application was complete and qualified, and he already had a nomination (presidential).
