I was curious to know if in Army ROTC, can one contract non-scholarship their sophomore year, but then try to pick up a scholarship later on (possibly a two year scholarship)?

Or does contracting non-scholarship not allow you to try and pick up a scholarship in the future?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the help.

4 year scholarship winners contract their freshman year.

3 year AD contract sophomore year as well as SMP Cadets.

When funds are available battalions may give 3.5, 3, or 2 year scholarships.

Non scholarship cadets who are not SMP can only contract their junior year.

LTC is for students that have completed 2 years of college and is done between their sophomore and junior year.

You would only go to BCT if you join the reserves or national guard, you are not required to go to BCT as a SMP cadet unless you choose to.

I did not know that... surprises me a little, but are you sure?

That would imply that new mid-Year scholarship monies could be applied to 1) upgrade a 3 Yr. AD to a 3.5 Yr. scholarship cadet, 2) upgrade non-scholarship MSIII into 1.5 year Scholarship... if that is even possible. Would a non-scholly cadet want to trade 1.5 yrs. of tuition for an extra year of service commitment? .

In order to move on to the Advanced Course (MS3/4) you must be contracted (i.e. obligation) scholarship or no to accept a commission. From what I was told when I contracted is that past 4 years every semester or 6 months is a year of service. I am not 100% on that though. For the other 2,3 year scholarships (never seen a 1.5, I have seen 3.5) I would seriously ask your ROO. They know all of the ins and outs/loopholes.

^ right. But can a non-scholarship, contracted MSIII , in December of Jr. year, because new money comes into the Battalion, then be given a 1.5 yr. scholarship and have his/her contract amended from 3 yr AD Service + 5 yr. Ready Reserves to 4 yr. AD + 4 Yr. Ready Reserves?

Possibly, however since FY 12 starts in OCT you would have to check with the HR guys/ROO to see if that money is available because right now the budget is suuuuper tight. Um, I don't think the contract changes but I am sure the 4+4 could be a possibility like traditional 4 year scholarships

I guess I should clarify what I meant regarding non scholarship cadets.

If a student starts college their freshman year, joins AROTC at the beginning of their freshman year and does not have a scholarship, they will be required to complete the first 2 years of the basic course. Assuming the cadet does not receive any scholarship they would then apply for the advanced course, if accepted they would contract the beginning of their junior year.

Of course if they receive a scholarship along the way before their junior year then they would contract when the accept the scholarship.

So basically my whole question flowed from this statement from the Citadel website.

"Cadets who have successfully completed MLTY 101 and MLTY 102 may contract during the first semester of their sophomore year (must have @30 credit hours, depending on academic major)."

http://www.citadel.edu/armyrotc/contracting/non-scholarship.html

Does that mean Citadel cadets can contract earlier then other ROTC units?

Here's my 2 cents.

contract sophomore year usually requires SMP or GRFD (which requires SMP).

Why would the Army offer a scholarship to someone who is already on contract. Your chances of getting a scholarship after you have already contracted will probably not happen any time soon. I've seen it in the past, when the year group is projected not to make mission, but at this time we are on tract to make mission the next couple years. Additionally, if you are contracted there is no reason to send you to LTC.
