West Point harbors US Coast Guard Boats

I've been by West Point aboard USCGC STURGEON BAY....talk about a cutter that would be a rough ride, it's hull is the shape of a football.

Forgive my lack of knowledge...I thought USCGCs all had white hulls and the black hulled vessels were buoy tenders and other maintenance-type craft. Is that not accurate?

For the most part, yes. Ice Breaking Tugs are black as well. We also have red hulls, which do heavier ice breaking.

A cutter is any CG vessel over 65'.

Even the black hulls are known as cutters. Some ocean-going buoy tenders (which are also cutters) are as large as 225' (Juniper class).

Despite their primary role of placing and maintaining Aids To Navigation, they also perform SAR and law enforcement missions.

The 140's have that "bubble system" that allows them to break significantly thick ice at a decent speed, very cool. :thumb:

Pretty sure the two cutters Penobscot Bay and Sturgeon Bay keep the Hudson River clear of ice from Bayonne to Albany every year.
 
I saw one of the docked USCG cutters on the way to Highland Falls for dinner. The crew seemed pretty busy prepping her for the storm.

And yes, those awesome cadets are awesome!
