As LOAs come in can people post their general profile:

ACT / SAT Scores:
GPA (weighted/non weighted):
Class Rank:
Are you coming in as a recruited athlete:
General ECs:
CFA Scores if completed:
Attendance in SLS:

Thank you for replying this will help the rest of us gain a better understanding.

Vista123,

I think we are beating a dead horse, but....

As stated infinite times before, this data won't help you gain a better understanding of who is selected for an LOA.

jadler is right on the money. That data is only a part of the Whole Person Score....I know you are thinking "but it will help me figure out how competitive I am."

No, it won't. Spend your time assembling the best application package you can.

The ONLY correct answer to "how competitive am I?" or "Are my scores good enough?" is " IT DEPENDS!!!" upon how competitive the applications are this cycle.....upon who else is applying from your district, state.....upon what the Navy decides it needs this year.....

You are still thinking "but, knowing the stats of LOA recipients will help me figure out more about the process. "

No, it won't. On this forum, I have witnessed applicants gain admission or get an LOA with a 28 ACT while others with a couple three varsity sports, eagle scout and a whopping 34 ACT do not receive an offer. It is a TOTAL waste of your time to gather this data. Absolutely meaningless.4"

Plus no one knows how competitive your area is for the certain year. I have met someone that only could not get a nom from his MOC but got the appointment through the presidential nom, despite having 33 ACT and number 1 in his graduating class.

Sure I would love to get an LOA now, but I can make myself more competitive by finishing my senior year strong than researching for more stats.

ok

ok -I hear you - I get it.
How about this
Im curious. is that an ok reason?
:)

I'm curious about Warren Buffett. How much does he really have? Why does he persist in suggesting that people in his position should pay more taxes ... all the while committing his fortune to a private foundation that he might not pay any? Go figure.

How many angels can boogie on the head of a pin?

All these are pretty much wasted wondering.

Vista123,

I understand your curiosity and I don't think you deserve the verbal beating that you're currently receiving. Yes, LOAs are rare and difficult to predict, but data like can be useful if you know the regions people are coming from because then you can use their given data to judge the competitiveness of certain districts. Good luck collecting the data.

And, come on guys, curiosity should not be scolded; it's a trait worth lauding. Let's all be civil because, look, it can't hurt to provide these stats. You can tell him all you want that his quest for statistics is purposeless but that won't stop anyone. As the first commenter said, it's 'beating a dead horse'.

We're curious candidates. Placate us.

Go Army :thumb:,

USMA 2016

me too

I would also like to know the stats. Maybe to make them more valuable you can add:

ACT / SAT Scores:
GPA (weighted/non weighted):
Class Rank:
Are you coming in as a recruited athlete:
General ECs:
CFA Scores if completed:
Attendance in SLS:
Geographical Area:

I agree with the above poster. it doesn't hurt to ask and people are curious. you dont have to answer if you dont want.

That's weird

That's strange to me that some posters would be so rude to a kid asking an innocent question. I agree that having the geographical region would make more of a somewhat complete picture but why so rude? I also would like to see these answers.

This thread constitutes a "verbal beating?" Huh.

Yeah, to an extent, it does.

Think about it.

LOAs aren't given out by regions -- so even if you knew that someone got an LOA from a specific MOC district or general "region," it wouldn't help you.

Plus, sometimes 5 candidates from a MOC district could get an appointment and sometimes 1 or none.

If everyone is really curious about stats, then look at what USNA publishes as a whole. What a VERY SMALL percentage of appointed candidates post on here doesn't indicate whether you will or will not receive an LOA or appointment.

I concur with the first few posters...better off focusing on how you can improve yourself. Additionally, I don't think anyone intends to "verbally beat" the OP, rather provide advice on where to focus the center of gravity.

In addition to the advice above, please understand that an LOA still needs a nom for an appointment. Unless you have a Pres nom, that remains a big hurdle for many. Last year, I had two LOA candidates who didn't receive noms. We can all moan and groan and say MOCs are "supposed to" or "try to" give noms to LOA candidates but the fact is that -- for whatever reasons -- not all LOA candidates get noms.

Some believe that USNA will "find" noms for those LOA candidates who don't receive them. That is simply not true in all cases. My 2 candidates last year who did not get noms did not receive appointments. Period. Three years ago, I had a candidate with an LOA and a nom but who never cleared medical. No appointment.

So, while LOAs are great, they are aren't plenty in number and are not the end of the story by a long shot.

Very well stated, jadler. Me thinks anyone who believes the comments on this thread constitute a "verbal beating" will be in for a VERY long plebe experience, should they secure an appointment to any SA.

Seriously, folks, there have been people in the past who gathered various stats then were shocked and amazed that they or their precious offspring, whose stats were superior, did not receive the coveted appointment. We are just trying to help you realize such stats mean absolutely nothing. And can lead to unfulfilled expectations........and great disappointments.

Caalmm down folks!

OP had a honest question. Some people have already stated "hey, this is useless!", I don't think there is necessity to point fingers.

Now, I think everyone is well aware the goal is an appointment, not a LOA. So let's just leave the OP alone, whoever wants to answer his question, feel free... If you are against this kind of question, your point of view was already posted here, so I don't think there's a need to say the same thing with different words!

Yeah, to an extent, it does.

Think about it.

No it doesn't. They were perfectly reasonable responses to a kind of unreasonable question that's been discussed here ad nauseum. Everyone gets it, you guys are antsy and want to know the secret for admission, a LOA, or whatever. No one here can state that with any certainty at all, and whatever statistics voodoo the OP planned to do with the replies wouldn't either.

Oh wait. I forgot, this is the Internet. It's SERIOUS BUSINESS and we have to "placate" high schoolers. My bad, I forgot you guys were entitled to stuff.

No one here is ill-intentioned, Hurricane! How about we just leave this as it is, pretend this debate hasn't happened? I think we could just relax about this. It was no-one's intention to start a discussion, right?

it can't hurt to provide these stats.

Hmmm, it's sure not going to help anyone's chances of being appointed either.

But it sure could hurt them and others:

1) You are posting information that could allow you to be identified by admissions or Field Force. Do you really want all of your posts scrutinized?

2) It can mislead others as to whether they are / are not competitive. When in fact, their competitiveness is very likely different.

The reality is that information of that nature is largely unactionable for an applicant. IE: You need to focus on making your app & test scores as good as you can. And getting a nom. Nothing in LOA postings can change that.

Previous years, date, forum handle, and state worked pretty well for LOA's. And mainly just to cheer the group on, and build excitement toward the regular announcements. I do think knowing if recruited for some reason (athlete, under represented district, etc) could be useful, but some may not want to post that.

stats on LOA'a without appointments

Are their any stats available on how many LOA's are offered that do not turn into an appointment, whether due to no nomination received or whatever?

It does not seem unreasonable to me and I would also be curious. If my son gets one, I will ne happy to share.
