Tomorrow is my first day of PT in Navy ROTC and I've never been more nervous for anything my entire life! I am so scared about the running aspect mostly, because no matter how much I run, I can't get better and build up endurance... :frown: Yay for 9 minute miles! Is anyone else feeling these pre-PT butterflies?

Just thought I'd post to get this out of my system... good luck to everyone in ROTC and at the Academies, let's get ready for a tough yet very rewarding year!

I wonder why the Navy cares about endurance running ... I get the pushups and situps because they build core strength, but, I mean, how BIG are Aircraft Carriers anyway that you'd need to be able to run 1-2 miles?

PT in ROTC is not very difficult at all. If you are in modest shape you will be fine. Takes about 2-3 weeks if you are not an athlete to adjust, but after that it just becomes second nature. Best of luck...

Navy has 2 levels of PFT.

Navy option cadets run 1.5 miles. Marine option cadets run 3 miles. Navy needs to run a bit faster to get a good score considering the length differential. I expect in terms of the Navy the run is perhaps primarily to get in some areobic conditioning vs the necessary endurance a Marine might require... but that's just surmise on my part.

The other difference is Navy does push-ups while Marines do pull-ups. Of course the expectation there in terms of quantity are vastly different. 92 pushups to max out vs 20 pullups to max out.

Tomorrow's Fitness Test

Good luck tomorrow. Get a good night's sleep and don't worry about how you will do. At this point you've done all your physical preparation. Remember:

1) You won't be running alone.

2) Everyone wants you to succeed.

You've already figured out that a 9 minute mile pace for a 17-19 year old female is considered "good" (though at the low end). If for some reason you fail the test, there will likely be others in the same boat, so to speak. Whether you pass or fail, aim to do better next time.

Just Have To Take The Hit...

You will do fine, they have a plan, they know what to expect and they know where to start, your not their first. Relax it's all good, the sooner you allow them to break down your civilan world the sooner you become what they need to develop, this is very important. Enjoy school and god speed when you reach the fleet. It will come sooner then you think!!!
