I found an excellent web site that answers most all of the questions regarding the process of appointments and nominations. It was very helpfull to me.

For candidates or parents that wish to know the appointment/nomination process, check the following website out. I believe that it is the USMA process however, it applies to all of the SAs.

Isn't that what we do here?

Is Service Academy Forums somehow lacking information about the process of appointments and nominations?

Knowledge is power, and I appreciate all the information I can get! Thanks for the link, Lyle. :thumb:

The process sounds simple. It's the application of it that is complicated. In all honesty, there's nothing a candidate can do other than develop his/her best "package."

You cannot control any other aspect of the process, including: how many noms your MOCs have in any given year; whether or not your MOCs interview candidates; whether your MOCs use the principal, ranking or open method; when your MOCs notify candidates they have or have not received an appointment; whether your MOCs require you to rank SAs or only pick one; whether your MOCs get together and limit noms to one nom per candidate or whether they do not do this; to whom various candidates are "slotted" by each MOC; whether your MOCs do or do not give a preference to LOA candidates; how many LOA candidates are applying to your MOC . . . and on and on.

I understand this is fascinating to some and confusing/terrifying to others. But it truly is out of your control. Knowing more probably makes you feel better but it won't give you more control over the process.

As a candidate, apply to EVERY SINGLE NOM for which you're eligible. Make your package as strong as possible and get it in ON TIME. UPDATE it with pertinent information until a decision is made. Then, sit back and wait to see what happens. Once you have that appointment in hand, it makes zero difference whether you are slotted to an MOC, the Pres, the VP, SecNav, the Supe or some other source. You have your golden ticket!

USNA 1985 - well said. The process is what it is and it continually achieves the desired results. Is it fair; maybe not always on an individual basis, but who can argue with the overall long term success of USNA.

I am very proud of USNA 3'q son (no LOA) with NROTC scholarship. Good luck to all of us waiting for "Blue Folder". If USNA says no, son will not look back and proudly move forward to NROTC university.

It is important to remember that noms are totally controlled by individual MOCs and not by USNA or the other SAs. The only requirement is that the MOCs comply with the relevant law(s).

So, even if you think the process is chaotic, confusing, unfair, etc., complaining to the SAs (as some folks, not anyone on this thread, seem wont to do) has zero effect nor can it have any effect as the SAs are powerless to change the nomination system. Only Congress can do that.

how to update your package with any significant new information

What is the best way to update your package.

For MOCs, the way they have indicated you should submit this info. If you're unsure (info not provided to you), contact the nomination coordinator and ask whether it should be snail mail, email, etc.

For USNA, snail mail always works.
