Norwich Son's Mentor

My son has an interesting mentor. We have a 90 year old neighbor, RP here in New Jersey. My Norwich son helped RP with some yard work a couple of years ago and they became friends. RP was in CCC 1936 -1939, 2nd Marines 1942 to 1946. It is an interesting perspective for my son. First hand account of growing up in the depression. Leaving home for years with the CCC and Marines. The perspective of life from some one who lived many years. RP fought on many islands but his favorite story is about a boy he took care of and fed for six months in Nagasaki 1945 and early 1946. They still correspond thru letters. He has shown Norwich son many of the letters.

Norwich son wrote to me about what RP told him about being a good officer....
He told me of the man Clark who commanded him in the War. A veteran of many battles, he was loved and respected by his men. He took care of them and trained them so well he could "Command with his eyes." RP said, "With a look from him we always knew what to do."
RP told Norwich son be like Clark.

Norwich son sends him postcards from all his schools and travels.

I seriously recommend these old vets as mentors. They have a lot to give even with all that they have given. Encourage your cadets to make those connections and listen.

As for RP I wave to him everyday as I leave for work, I thank him with the assist for my son and for being part of generation that saved the world.

Absolutely, thank you RP! Great story

RP told me about Okinawa this past Sunday. He lost all his buddies. It is amazing that these men came back and raised families and built very good lives. They are a great example to another Great American Generation. who are serving and have served recently.
